lordmetalz28 05-28-2003, 07:32 PM just wondering how much horse i should have with my 87 305tpi with a cat back flowmaster system, accel 8.8 wires, accel cap and rotor rapid fire ac plugs removed baffles from air box with k and n drop ins bypassed tb coolant and an airfoil. i was told the 87 tpi got 205 hp from the factory because of the beefed up rollercam when teamed witht the 700r4 just wondering how much horse i should estimate and torque:death: :death: :death:
ICEmanZ 05-28-2003, 09:52 PM specs for a stock '87 305 TPI AUTO are:
190HP@4000
295TQ@3200
> '87 thru '89 automatics came w/ a waeker cam, giving the 5-speeds a 25HP advantage over the autos (215 vs. 190)
**************************************************
what does your 305 put out now? well if i had to take a guess, i'd expect a decent 25HP gain, so that'd bring you up to around 215. i think it'd be safe to say your motor is putting out somewhere around there.
87DJP2001 05-29-2003, 08:27 AM About 190/195 HP, reason nothing you did or added will increase HP by much. Just Items to make the engine run better then stock.  How if you added Headers or 3" Catback exhaust now you might make 215 HP at the fywheel.;)
ICEmanZ 05-29-2003, 10:26 AM he's gotta be up over 200, for sure... i mean w/ those mods he's gotta be adding an extra 15 horses, at least... i believe it'd be safe to say he's putting out a decent 205 if not maybe more

What performance Mods has lordmetalz28 Added to make Horsepower??? Also what with your Profile what do you think your HP is??? You dont make Horsepower for example by installing sparkplug wires and a AIRFOIL.;) ;)
doug791 05-29-2003, 04:54 PM wouldnt the exhaust help with hp a bit?
and come on with k&n's and an air foil hes gotta be making at least 1-2 extra horses :D
lordmetalz28 05-29-2003, 05:25 PM thats why im asking cause i dont know. i like the answers i hear very reason able i did read in the 87 tpi iroc-z brochure they came factory with 205 but if you say 190 i believe it headers are a no no at this point the bolts are siezed in there and until i rebuild the motor i wont be adding headers i heard pulleys are good but mess with charging and cooling which im running 13 exact at voltage so i might not mess with that either oh and just for the record im not running my smog or ac belt. just wondering not assuming or insisting just a freindly question
87DJP2001 05-29-2003, 05:55 PM If you want a final answer and not some guess estimates have your car tested on a Dyno. For a location check this site www.dynojet.com .;) ;)
lordmetalz28 06-01-2003, 09:14 PM dynoed at 232hp and 319 tq thanks for the link bro
ICEmanZ 06-01-2003, 09:22 PM uh huh, and look what he's putting out!
people thought i was crazy when i was talking about his car gaining about a good 25HP... turns out i under estimated!
so HA!
just kidding... it's all good!

sparkplug wires by themselves may not add power, but when combined w/ other upgrades i guarantee that such parts will help make more power as compared w/ "stock" plugs and wires....
for example... lets say a 305TPI gets some decent mods installed BUT still has the "stock" plugs and wires... i'd be willing to bet these parts will certainly add power, but when combined w/ aftermarket plugs, wires and maybe even an ignition coil, there will be a slight power increase. think about it...
stronger spark + better combustion = power increase
so ok maybe we aren't talking about no 20HP gain, but chances are there will be some type of increase showing up on the dyno!
TheGreatJ 06-01-2003, 09:48 PM Plugwires and a coil and such things as that are more "support" mods than anything else. They don't give you power just by having them.....but if you have made other modifications you may need them to maximize your potential.
For instance...if you do a head swap that bumps up your compression, you need a stronger spark to light the mixture effectively. Therefore, you need a stronger coil and more conductive wires. If you install a rev-kit that will keep your valvetrain stable up to say 7000rpm, then you need a performance ignition module because the stock modules start to scatter at around 5000-5500rpm.
AutoRoc 06-02-2003, 01:22 AM Lets see here. a cat back flowmaster system, accel 8.8 wires, accel cap and rotor rapid fire ac plugs removed baffles from air box with k and n drop ins bypassed tb coolant and an airfoil.
Cat back-25hp
Wires- 5hp
Rotor/cap/plugs-15hp
cut some plastic-10hp
K&N Filters(2! The big ones!)-25hp
Bypass and airfoil- 10hp
I wish the aftermarket was real in every way:( 280 or so Hp wouod be awesome but I would say you added 20-30 more HP across the entire powerband. Definately a good improvement! Goodluck and keep it safe.

Wow, you dyno about the same as a stock LT1, but with more torque.
ICEmanZ 06-02-2003, 06:58 AM TheGreatJ got what i was trying to say... he just made it more clear... thanks man!
87camracer 06-02-2003, 08:08 AM i say all that is gonna put him at no than 200 hp at the flywheel. you have to remember that his engine probably has a lot of miles on it. meaning worn out compenents. so the stuff he is adding should put you back up near stock numbers and i decided to be generous with the flowmaster. any performance oriented person knows there are better alternatives cuz flowmaster SUCKS. PERIOD.
lordmetalz28 06-02-2003, 11:19 PM 232 and 319 i supposed the dyno lies to sorry just hold onto your doors when i go past you
BLOWN25TH 06-03-2003, 09:50 AM No disrepect at all. But no way is he making just as must HP as a stock LT1. I dont have a LT1 but a stock LT1 makes 275 at the flywheel. I think the 232 posted is at the flyweel. I just can't see those numbers being at the rear wheels. But if they are? You are making just as much HP as a stock LT1. I just dont see it with the mods you have. Maybe you have a 5.7? One thing to pay atttension to is the throttle body coolant bypass. It's proven to produce between 6 and 7HP. Another note is all dynos are not the same. All of them are not calibrated regulary. I think this is unfair to those who are paying good money to spend time on one.
lordmetalz28 06-04-2003, 04:59 PM 232 hp and 275 are quite different. the lti came with a stock 275 which is more then 232 if you add correct am i right. so how could i be pushing the same horse as an lti when i have 232 and they have 275 i think the lti has more maybe im missing something

To set the record straight on your Dyno Numbers. Are you saying
the 232 and 319 are at the Rearwheels or the Flywheel ?? Some people get confused;) ;) I expect your numbers are 185 RWHP and 255 RWTQ on the Dyno. That is with a 20% drivetrain loss and that would be normal for your 305.
Nitromethane 06-05-2003, 01:12 AM I've seen a 91 or 92 305 TPI make 210 rwhp with the only mod being "true dual exhaust".
LT1's = 275hp at the flywheel which calculates to ~220rwhp assuming a 20% loss. 232hp at the wheels, which i am assuming his numbers are, is about what I'd expect an LT1 to pull, and thats more than my 350TPI made at the last dyno (pre-headers), but I got beat on hp by a 305 when I had 207rwhp so I won't say its impossible.
