no real secret... just honest weight loss. Pulled all the stock seats and installed a Jaz racing seat. The usual stuff is gone...jack, spare, etc. Also pulled the cat and muffler and replaced them with straight pipes for weight savings an free flowing gases. I pulled the AIR, a/c and ALL related parts, heater core, HVAC assembly and controls. The heavy rubber pad under the dash cap is gone too.
I think thats about it. pretty much everything else is stock. So I think with some more creative dieting and some good air it's gonna be tickling the 13.0s :D
Yomama 05-24-2003, 01:01 AM You forgot the 1/2 of firewall you pulled. Poor chads car:cry: My 1st time racing I got 8 runs in with Mike and Becca, best time was 13.76 @ 102.46. That's with a stock car, that's not bad is it?

the half a firewall is the HVAC stuff I mentioned :)
Your times are pretty good for never having raced before anywhere...and with a 6 speed :)

Scattered the driveshaft on the first green light of the night :( He had to leave the car there. I am supposed to see if I can line up a tow dolly for the morning, but I can't get ahold of the guy that owns it tonight, and I have to be in Ann Arbor by 10 am tomorrow.
Anyone else that can meet him there and give him a tow back to kzoo? He needs to do it ealry because he is supposed to leave for saginaw after lunch I think
dreamer1q 05-24-2003, 01:40 AM I have the stock car trailer sitting in my driveway. I cant make it down there to get it, but your more then welcome to use it. Just come pick it up. Sorry to hear that Chad. Let me know if you want me to find you a new shaft. I know where a few are hiding;)

I need a 1le shaft if you can dig one up :) my car vibrates like mad now with these gears once it gets up around 90 or so.
BTW, how did the install go tonight?

As for the install, we got everything back together except the drivers side header. Seems the new oil pan and the header dont like each other. I will pick up a new plug for that side of the pan and a bigger hammer tomorrow;) Should have it done tomorrow sometime. Just need to finish the header and stuff it back in the car. From there it is all easy stuff.
Thanks to Ben and Chris for the help. Much appreicated as always.

AL SS590 M6 05-24-2003, 07:36 AM Hey Chad,
If you crap out on a way to get your car. Give me a call. I'm all set up to transport f-bodys to and from the track:)
In other words my truck and trailer are ready to go if you need them.
Grover 05-24-2003, 08:01 AM Thanks guys. I am getting ready to call U-haul to find one of the two wheel dollies to get it back home. I've got the Yukon to pull it with, I just need to get something to put the car on. I was underneath it last night in the dark removing all the carnage.
Let's just say that the driveshaft loop is a VERY good investment for everybody. A front loop at a minimum and preferably a back one too. My 3 1/2" Dynotech Engineering driveshaft that I just paid to have shortened when the car was at Speedworks is now in 4 pieces.
This was on Nitto's and an easy launch with the Street Twin.
AL SS590 M6 05-24-2003, 08:43 AM What you have to watch with a dolly and a Firebird is the nose. It will hit the dolly before the tires get to the ramps. Maybe take some boards to roll the car up on prior to the ramps?
My offer still stands. I can go get it with the trailer if you want.
dreamer1q 05-24-2003, 09:23 AM Chad, I also have my aluminum driveshaft here that you could use. It is a extra, and then you could drive her home. Give me a beep if you need it.

Actually I just jacked the car up and put stands under it and then backed the dolly under the car. It worked really good. I will post a picture of the driveshaft and of the car hooked to the Yukon.
Redbird 05-24-2003, 11:30 AM ... and I'll say it again... ALUMINUM DRIVE SHAFTS ARE NOT MADE FOR DRAG RACING! Sure... they'll hold up for AWHILE, but not like a steel shaft. If your gonna spend the money, buy a LIGHTENED steel shaft!
By the way TW... Redbird went over the scale at Milan with me 1/2 gas, helmet, coat, everything but the bottle at 3390 #s. You gotz nice times too, on a tired old LT1. Those are LS1 numbers.
Redbird probably would have been lighter had I had an ALUMINUM driveshaft but I still have the steel stocker. :)
Chad... Sorry to hear of your damage, put your old steel shaft back in! M6's just shock the poop out of the whole drivetrain, especially strong ones that hook! Us A4 guyz get away with alot more!
HInk (feelin' Chads pain, happy for the 'wolf') :death:

Either the aluminum ones are really expensive or I got screwed again at Modern Musclecar. This darn driveshaft was $429, I will now get one of the Denny's Nitrous Ready Driveshafts.
Hink, I can't put the steel one back in because I don't have it and with the 12 bolt in the car the original ones won't fit.

Yomama 05-24-2003, 01:47 PM Damn I was right behine you in the burn out box. Boy was that an odd noise when it broke lose.
TheNovaMan 05-24-2003, 02:19 PM Yup, it's a horrible, unmistakable noise. I have it on tape too. I wish I hadn't stopped the tape before they pushed it away, but it's less humiliating for the car that way. It was pretty cool to watch though Chad! Think of it as a testament to hte power you're putting down. :)

FYI, this is not a good thing. I get mine fixed, you break yours. Lets stop this NOW!:p We will never get a chance to run each other.:D
Q
Grover 05-25-2003, 07:47 AM I know, it's not like I broke it on purpose. The Denny's Nitrous Driveshaft will be ordered sometime this week.
limige 05-25-2003, 08:52 AM wow, bummer, sorry to hear about it!!! that alum shaft looks pretty thin walled! darn engineers aren't good for much, well most anyway...
seems like the street twin is a pretty wicked peice...i've heard of alot of messed up tranny's, rearends, and now driveshafts....hummm, guess i better get everything else beefed up before i order mine!
good luck getting back on the strip quick!
Black Sunshine/ 00SS 05-25-2003, 09:59 AM Just so you know. There is a 4 week wait on the Denny's. I called to check on getting mine shortened for the T400. 2 weeks just to get mine shortened. Which I cant do until the trans gets here & I measure. If you need to use the Denny's I got, you can. You know where I live. I'll only be here til Tue.
robvas 05-25-2003, 10:02 AM Guys have broken aluminum driveshafts with stock cars.
Therefore, you should trade me for my steel one :D

94bird 05-25-2003, 09:37 PM Mike,
So how much does your car weigh now? I haven't taken any weight out from under the hood yet, except for removing the cruise control, but it's coming soon. VFN hood, Hawker battery,
!AC, !heater, !EGR, !AIR, !headlights, SLP headers, and maybe a Kmember.
Right now I've removed about 375 lbs. from the car, but added a rollbar that I didn't have a chance to weigh.
Going to Grattan in the morning for a track day. Wahoo!
If any of your west siders want to come out, they're doing some touring laps for people who haven't registered for the track day. The touring laps are around lunchtime. I'll be the guy in the dark green '94 Firebird with black ZR1 wheels.
http://www.grattanraceway.com
Timberwolf 05-25-2003, 09:40 PM not sure what it weighs. I have pulled a LOT of crap outta there, but there is still plenty to go. I may go weigh it this week.
I'm gonna leave the headlights, as I want to drive to and from the track.
I'm debating the next step. I have some more weight I can pull if I want... I am tempted to see if I can get it in the 12s with the stock motor and just creative dieting and tuning.
Right now I am just using the hypertech.bin tunercat file that Q has posted on his board. I forgot my cable so I didn't get to log my runs at the track and see where I have room for improvement.
But like I said, it was getting faster on EVERY run until they stopped test and tune...I think it has more in it.
Red89GTA 05-25-2003, 10:34 PM Seems like a lot of ppl i know are stripping out there cars. A friend of mine has a 1st gen RX-7 (2800lb stock i think, must be nice:mad: ), its probably under 2000lbs now, its a little faster than stock now:D. I believe when new they were 17 sec cars (12a, non-turbo), last time he went out to the track it went 15s. This is with the ALL STOCK motor, just weight savings. Next time he'll be in the low 14s, most likely, yet to do any performance mods, just additional wight he's shaved.
TheNovaMan 05-26-2003, 03:34 PM Mike, I didn't get your 13.21 on tape, but I did get your 13.29 pass and several others. I have alot of f-body video from that night. :)
notstock4long 05-26-2003, 08:39 PM Timberwolf, think you could stop by this coming weekend and help me get my car back together after taking the AC out??? You have mentioned it a few times and it sounds like you know what you are doing.
Timberwolf 05-26-2003, 08:42 PM Pete, can you dub me a copy of that tape?
Notstock, possibly... Let me see what's going on this weekend. What day you think?
notstock4long 05-26-2003, 08:58 PM Doesn't matter what day, I was thinking Saturday just so I could have anther day incase stuff doesnt work out. I am taking the engine out, so today I got almost everything out of the way, and took the compressor right out. Just seems like a waste of time and money trying to put it back on the new engine, since it doesn't even work right now. What day would work for you?

not sure yet. do you have the 1le delete pulley? You'll need it to run the accessory belt unless you ditch the power steering too
notstock4long 05-26-2003, 09:04 PM How does that pulley go on? It doesn't seem like there would be anything for it to attach to. I thought I just needed a smaller serpentine belt.
Timberwolf 05-26-2003, 09:08 PM Originally posted by notstock4long

the pulley comes with a bracket that bolts to the holes not used by the a/c compressor anymore. even uses the same bolts.
It's about $40 from gmpartsdirect.com
notstock4long 05-26-2003, 09:12 PM Okay, I guess I will have to buy that too. What other stuff can come off with the AC? Seems like there are about 100 hoses just for that. I also won't need the little radiator that sits in front of the big one right? But then how does the big one hold in place?
Timberwolf 05-26-2003, 09:17 PM Originally posted by notstock4long

If I can get up there this weekend I will show you a bunch of tricks, depending on how far you want to go with your diet plan :)
What are your plans for the car? Want to keep heat or not? There is a lot more weight that can be removed when you ditch the heater core and a/c core, all the ductwork, the blower motor, the plenum, airbags, etc
The a/c condensor comes out easily and the radiator is still held in place by the core support cover just as before
notstock4long 05-26-2003, 09:25 PM Well, I think thats about all I want to do for weight reduction now, although I don't really need heat either...:D Right now my plans are to just get the car running. My new engine should be here tomorrow, and I want to start on it soon. You don't happen to have a happy hooker by any chance do you?
Is the black pump on the drivers side that bolts to the front of the engine part of the AC system?
Timberwolf 05-26-2003, 09:29 PM happy hooker? is that like a purple horny?
dirvers side pump is the AIR pump
notstock4long 05-26-2003, 09:33 PM LOL, the happy hooker just bolts to the fuel rails or whatever and makes the engine easier to pull. Let me know what day this weekend you might be available when you find out.

whatever is easiet for you man! don't put too much effort into it...so if it's easier to do the whole tape and just let it run, that's fine
Grover 05-27-2003, 01:55 PM Then, I'll get a copy of my breakage from Mike.
TheNovaMan 05-27-2003, 02:19 PM Actually I can make you your very own copy! I didn't get the track guys pushing it back leaving driveshaft chunks all over though. :(
Grover 05-27-2003, 03:52 PM That would be cool Pete, Laura was upset that she didn't get to see me break the car.
TheNovaMan 05-28-2003, 12:07 AM Sure thing. Did you notice how similar your aluminum DS break was to Derty's aluminum DS break?
Grover 05-28-2003, 07:31 AM I remember Steve breaking his, I'll have to get in touch with him and find out what type his was.
