Oxidation and Brake Dust on Chrome Rims...

I have a heavy build up of brake dust and oxidation on my crome rims (about 5-6 months of it - Don't ask :)..It's to the point where as it won't come off with a simple scrub of soap and water.

I simply need to know what the best thing to use to get it all off and get that shine back to normal...I was thinking of using some simple green but I wasn't sure if that was safe for the rims.

Also, what should I use to scrub them with? I don't wanna use a scouring pad, I would think that would scratch them...

Go out and buy some chrome polish. I would imagine that would take it off. I think mothers has some aluminum and mag polish that is also good for chrome. Took off rust from a MBX bike I had.

Thanks for the reply Redryder...I have some Mothers polish but I think it's gonna take some scrubbing with something to get it off...I just wanna be careful what I use, so as I don't scratch them up.

By the way...I was checking out your website...and you have to tell me what your brother has done to his car for it to beat you in the straights. I use to have a 95 Mustang GT (94-95=very slow) and in mine and others experience, no matter what you do to it...it's gonna be slow...Did he drop a 351 in it, cause there is no way he should be taking you on his stock motor.

I've used mothers on both Chrome and polished aluminum and it almost always does the trick! Give it a shot. Just use a soft cloth, some elbow grease, and let mothers do the rest!

Well, he had done most of the bolt ons...headers, h-pipe, intake, and heads/cam. He does however have no tires out back or tuning. When he gets that, it will be murder for me:p

Well I am glad it worked out for you...:D

If your wheels aren't polished without clearcoat then I would get some wheel acid. All you do is spray it on and you can just about hose off all the dirt.

Do a search for professional detailing products on yahoo and you'll probably find something.

By the way, dont use the polish but only when necessary. It contains abrasives which will scratch the chrome if overdone.

You may have just answered this but since I polished them and it rained I have already gotten some surface rust...What can I do seal out the rain from getting rust on them?

Of course...now I have to replace my opti that went out on my last week...it's always something with this thing!
