go to autozone and ask for something that removes bugs and tree sap. i think its called goo-be-gone or something but im not real sure... anyway it works great taking off sap.

That way you aren't rubbing chemicals all over your car

good idea, because I was going to clay the car any ways.

Is clay baring the best way to get rid of surface scratchs?

No, a clay bar will not remove surface scratches. It will however make your paint very smooth because it removes all those impurities from your paint like sap, overspray, metal shavings.....

Before you do anything else, you may want to try posting this over in the "Show and Shine" forum.

"Goof Off" works great, looks like a little bottle of lighter fluid. it removes sap, road tar, bugs and just about anything else that gets stuck to the paint. Good stuff.

I would not use a clay bar to remove tree sap. You want to chemically remove the tree sap. Rub LIGHTLY with whatever you pick (rubbing alcohol, goo gone, bug & tar remover, etc.) but whatever you do, don't SCRUB it like crazy. Let the chemical do the work for you and dissolve the tree sap.

I'll move this to the Show and Shine forum..

Everyone is going to kill me for saying this, but lacquer thinner is by far the easiest way to take sap off. It won't damage or scratch you paint if you don't rub hard. Make sure to polish and wax after.

I would not recommend just anyone use thinner to remove bugs, tar, etc from the paint, if you are not careful it will bite into your paint, I actually used to paint cars for a living before I went back to school, I have seem a couple of people ruine paint by not properly using thinner, if you rub hard or leave it on long it will cause problems. JMO!

Claybar it. That's how I get sap off my truck. Here in Florida, I have to clay almost every wash :( But it always comes right off. Just make sure you get a good claybar.

I have always used denatured alcohol and a soft cloth. It works great and won't harm paint. It is available at Wal-Mart or any drugstore.

You'd realy have to be a moron or have one heck of a crappy paint job to ruin it. The worst that will happen is that you'll get some light scratches unless you let it soak on the paint or rub the hell out of it.
