Anyone have a '96 Camaro Z or SS in Detroit area? I need a 20 minute favor...

If any one has a '96 Camaro (with a V8) and lives in the Detroit area, would you mind helping me out?

I have a wheel that was supposedly made for my '96 but it will not fit on my 2002. I never put it on the '96 so I need to test it to see if the '96 and '02 cars have the same backspacing/wheel wells.

If you don't mind helping me out, I will drive to your place with my jack and wheel, carefully jack up your car, take your wheel off, and just attempt to fit my wheel on the hub and see if it fits. After that, I will out your wheel back on. I don't have to drive the car, put lug nuts on it or anything. Just gotta see if my wheel fits on the hub and in the wheel well. That's all.

I don't have a '96, but I did have a '94
and now I've got a '98. I had the same
wheels on both cars. The wheels fit the
same on both of them. I have heard that
the LS1 brake system is larger and will not
allow earlier wheels to fit.

Jason, it's not the brakes you need to worry about, but from what I've heard part of the hub is slightly larger on the 97 or 98 and up cars. Sometimes wheels fit fine, and other times there's the need for very slight "massaging".
No difference in back-space or anything like that though.

I the brakes are not the problem. The hub might be, but I don't think so either.

The reason that I ask is because I ordered a set of wheels for my '96 but never put them on. I tried to put them on my '02 and couldn't even get it on properly because the tire would squeeze against the inner wheel well before even getting it snug against the hub. If I were to even try to tighten the lugs nuts down and drive 10 feet, it would rip the tire to shreds. I want to make sure they sent me the wrong wheel and not the right wheel for my '96 but won't fit on my '02 due to a possible design change in between. Get it? http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

I measured the backspacing of the wheel and it came out to 7.75 inches, which I think to be WAY too big.

Hmmm... There wasn't any changes that would have made that much of a difference. I'd guess that the wheel is completely wrong for the application.
I know that for 15"x10" drag wheel, the correct backspace is 7.5", so 7.75" is plausible for a wide rim.

You're welcome to test-fit it on my car if you like. I'll be gone all weekend though.

Hmmm...maybe it IS the hub then. Now that I think about it, it was dusk when I tried to put it on. Still, I could swear I had the wheel lined up on the studs just fine. I remember I could push really hard and get the wheel to sit flat against the hub but it would be squeezing the tire against the wheel well. So, I still think there is something wrong with the wheel, but I am gonna go over to Frezza's house and chack it out. BTW, it is a 17" x 10.5" with BFG Drag Radials.

What size tire are you trying to fit on the rear?
I had to file down some WS6 rims to get them to fit on the hub, nothing major, about 3 RCHs off the center hole. They fit on the front fine, it was just the rear.

I tried to put a friend's 97 SS rims on my car (94) and they wouldn't fit. The hub definitely changed. Not sure if it was 96 or 97 that it happened.

When I got my Vette rims, they wouldn't fit either. One quick pass around the inside of the rim with a dremel and they fit.

A 2000 16" trans am rim would not fit on my 95 Z28. The hub in the LS1 cars is bigger, and the rim was "loose" on my smaller hub.

You jacked it up using the frame and the tire was pushing against the axle rebound rubber because the axle was droped down?

I've worked on a lot of F-bod's in my shop
and the ones with wide wheels (deep backspacing)bind on the bump stops when you lift them by the frame... http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif
If I had been on this morning I could have told you to put a floorjack under the axle and try again...

I had this exact same problem when I bought some 2k firebird wheels from Rod442. The hub size did change when they went to 2k. Only one of the wheels didnt fit, the right rear, what I had to do was turn the rim over, and on the inside part behind the center cap there is an extra lip on the rim. I took a dremmel and made it even with the rest of the rim and put it on, not a problem since for the 1.5+yrs that I have had them.

Is the problem solved just by jacking the car up, or is that just how you found out what the problem is?

Maybe you can help me on my question about Z06 rims fitting on my 96 camaro...

When the car was jacked up by the body point in front of the rear wheel, the rear axle would hang lower than normal. When placing the wheel/tire on, the tire would hit the bump stop. So, I put the tire on as far as I could, put the lugs on and hand tightened them. Then I set the car down and used the wrench to tighten the lugs completely. Perfect fit when weight is placed on the car, just not when the car is jacked up.
