ive had my bird for a few months now, and there has allways been this high pitched whine coming from the engine bay. ( when i first drove the car and heard it, i thought it was supercharged, so i had to pop the hood and check, but unfortunately its not). im thinking it may have a gear drive for the cam, but i was told it was a lease car and if i had a lease i wouldnt do something like that. just wandering what it was cuz all my friend say they thought it was blown when i first showed it to em...but were just some hs kids who wanna be mechanics... thanks

More than likely its one of the accessories-pullies/belt....doing it.
Take of the belt....and see if its still there. Then that way you know if its the engine itself or the accessories. :)

I have had that problem right before the alternator died, and then real super-charger sounding after it went.

Same here it was the alternator, whining w/revs.Could be Power steering pump but that more of a groaning whine. You can tell by using a short broom stick or your breaker bar.Hold one end on the accesory in question the other end in/over your ear and the sound will transmit thru the stic/bar.If you hear the sound in question thru the "Mechanics Stethoscope" you know you isolated where its coming from. And for god sake be careful not to drop it in the moving belts,be careful.
Good for listening to lots of things like valve train,Timing chain, block noises ect.

Hah! I had that problem for about 2 months now... finally found out what it was the hard way. My car sounded just like you describe, supercharged. Well, the other day, on the way back from the parts store with parts for my '67 no less, I found it what it was... the tensioner pulley! I spun the bearing clear out of it, which in turn binded my belt up in my AC compressor. I was almost home, so I decided to limp it home on battery power (luckily I put a stereo in this car, so I have a secondary battery in the back), and overheated pretty solidly. The water pressure blew my top radiator hose and I was spewing like a fountain when I pulled into my driveway! After all was said and done, it only cost me $40 for a belt, pulley, and hose. You might want to take the belt off and spin that pulley by hand. If it doesn't spin, just go pick up a new pulley at the parts store. It should only run you $10-$15.

I remember I was driving around, and all of a sudden, the idle pulley just popped out, I don't remember any whining and the pulley was cheap and easy to replace.

I have a similiar whine...though i would call it a sort of whistle.. Too bad it can't imitate the speed and feel of a supercharger instead of just the sound. ;)
