Is Zaino really only good for 12-24 Hours w/ZFX?

Hi everyone,

I Zainoed my SS for the first time this weekend and - WOW! That stuff really makes the Navy metallic jump! Now I have about 1 ounce of Z-2 and 1.5 ounces of Z-5 left in my bottles. I read in the instructions on their website (shortly after I had already mixed the ZFX in of course) that you cannot use the mixture after 24 hours and if you leave it in the bottles, they cannot be cleaned. Is this really the case, or can I get by for a couple of days with the Z-2 and add another couple of coats. It just seems a shame to throw it away just because I didn't have my brain in gear when I mixed it.

Thanks,

Throw it away... :(

It's like epoxy...once you mix it, whatever you don't use goes in the trash. The chemicals have been activated and they are only good for a finite amount of time.

Jason, if the polish does not become too thick you can use it, but usually after a day or two it's done. :(

Yup, you need to either use it up or toss it out. The ZFX activated polish is only good for 12-24 hours, so it's best to mix up just enough so that you don't waste any. If I'm just doing 1 or 2 coats, I'll mix up only about half the ZFX bottle, and somethimes this is still too much. The ZFX causes the polish to harden quickly and will harden or gumm up in the bottle if left untreated or unused.

Actually a friend of mine mixed up a couple of bottles of Z2/ZFX about a month ago, and while it seems to be a little crusty on the edges, there is still quite a bit of perfectly liquid usable wax in there which he has been using and it seems to work fine. I think if you keep it at room temperature and seal it up tight it should be fine.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I decided to toss the batches I made up; the Z-5 was already getting chunky. I will know next time not to make up such a large amount.

Thanks again,

Hmmm... maybe I'll stick with my old fashioned Z1/Z2 habits.
