Error Codes

What is the process in finding the error codes for the check engine light and when I do get the error codes, where can I translate them into the problem?

THe last car I had to do this with was an 84 Pontiac Fiero which I had to loop a jack under the console plate then turn on the car, without starting and the dash light would flash in a certain sequence denoting the error code and I could go from there.

I do not have a error code reader and I do not have the money to buy one, though I know someone that works for an auto parts store and he is going to see if they will lend me one for a day.

Thank you in advance,
Aaron

if i remember correctly,i think u jump a wire (or a paper clip) from the top right terminal to the bottom right terminal on the plug that u would use to read the codes w/ a scanner. then turn on the key and watch the flashes.

hope that helps

Sorry I forgot to ask in detail on this. Where is thedeal located that you would plug the scanner in? under the dash or still located under the console as in the case of the fiero?

I think I may have found the DLCI conenctor, which is connected right under or close to being directy under the steering column shaft. It has 12 pinouts and I do not see another connector with 12 pinouts. Is this the one I should use to jump pins 6 & 12? I also read that some cars may not have the dlci which makes code reading basically impossible.
