Hello Everybody. I just bought a 2000 Black Z28 with 39,000 miles for 16,800. I love the power(I had a 99 Grand Am).
I was wondering the Cheapest way To add HP to my car!!
psychocabbage 04-30-2003, 12:55 PM bang for the buck would be nitrous..
But if you just got a used car, shouldnt you get used to it before adding power!?! Also, do you know whats been done to the car so far? How new to you is it?
By power are you wanting to drag race it or corner faster? What are you specifically wanting out of your car?
Do you have any idea how much power it has now? Have you gone to the track or had the car on a dyno?
These will all help you in deciding how to add your power and where it needs it.
Black01_Z 04-30-2003, 01:24 PM Lid, KN Filter, and a cutout. Check out Installuniversity.com for the free mods to. These are the cheapest ways to pick up power. Then for a little more money get an LS6 Intake and Longtube Headers.
BTW Congrats on the new ride.
Black Camaros
The car is all stock. I heard they have 305 HP stock. By the way it is Black.
I'll have about 1500 to spend.

They claimed 305 at the flywheel when they are stock, but it is pretty well known that the number is wrong. In all honesty they probably need to swap the 0 and the 5 around because I think it is closer to 350 at the flywheel. My 2000 SS dynoed 317 to the rear wheels with basically just a lid and freebies.
Congrats on the car though! :)
I also don't know where to get these parts. The Web, Local store, ETC.... ?????
psychocabbage 04-30-2003, 01:46 PM that means nada..
305hp could be what you put to the ground or it may be 280 you are putting down.. thats why you need to find out for sure or get to the track and find out how fast your car is and its weight if possible.
I know that more power wont help me until I get more TRACTION.. so tires are what I take with me to the track.. once I can consistantly rip off 1.8's then I will start adding things to get more power..
traction and hp.... delicate balance!
Where do I go to get dyno testing done??
TEA_BRENT 04-30-2003, 02:35 PM With a good heads/cam package you'll pick up a ton of power. I have guys with h/c and long tubes making 440rwhp. I was running a sale till the end of April were you could get the heads for 1440. The after sale price is 1700. That's fully cnc ported heads that flow 300cfm on the intake at .600 and 260cfm on the exhaust. The heads come with dual 1.440 springs, titanium retainers, new everything. We have stage 1 heads for cheaper if you are interested. Send an e-mail or call.
SteveC 04-30-2003, 04:04 PM psychocabbage hit the nail on the head, dollar for dollar, nitrousing a car will produce the maximum bang for the buck, without tearing the motor apart.
Be careful what system you purchase though.
For the record my car is not nitroused.
SteveC :)

Congrats on the new ride!!! Just a word of caution; once you start modding, you can never stop ;) As far as first mods would go, I would take it slow. Get some sub-frame connectors, a lid, and maybe an exhaust. Then, you can go from there.

Ferocity02 04-30-2003, 08:02 PM First mod on ANY car should be a Cat-back system. Depending on how much you want to spend, $300-$800, you can get a cat-back. In my opinion, Borla is the best bolt on system. If you want to go cheaper, SLP Loudmouth, Hooker, Flowmaster, and many others :thumb:
Next should come the air lid. Gives very good power for the buck. After that, get some chassis mods like sub-frame connectors. Then go back to the engine, depending on your $$$, you can get an can, LS6 intake, heads/cam, stroker kit, or supercharger (cheapest to most expensive :D)
Of course you can't forget about the wheels.
It's all what you want to do really, but we can tell you if it is a decent mod for your car according to other mods and you can make the final descision :thumb:
Good luck!
My 2001 Z28 with ONLY a lid and filter pulled 303rwhp and 304rwtrq... Providing about 15% loss or so with a M6 we're talking like 348hp at the fly.. so I'd have to say 305 at the fly is a flat out lie! .. maybe GM did there pull on top of the tallest mountain with an air temp of 110f+?.. maybe!
I need to do another pull with my Hooker cat-back and see what I can get.

dam i thought the prices in chicago were high
i got my 00 with 40k on it for 15 :D
as for mods...get drag radials!
danziger 05-01-2003, 10:14 AM Congrats on the new ride! I'd do the free mods first and a little weight reduction, then check out the sponsors both here and at ls1.com, or ls1tech.com for these items:
Airlid
Cat-back
Headers (mid or long-tube)
LS6 intake
Pulley (ASP)
I agree with getting a baseline dyno and tune-up before buying anything. Other proven items include nitrous, heads/cam, strokers, and 12-bolts. I am not a big fan of FI, but it suit your needs. Good luck! Ben
myricekiller 05-01-2003, 11:34 AM while we r on this subject i always wanted to ask. Its known that ss are under rated with hp at the wheels now is this generally known for z28's 2? also most of the stock ls1's(or close to stock) i see putting down monster numbers are 2000+. Has anyone here seen ealier ls1's put better numbers than the stock figure. I have a 98 z28 a4 most people are telling me that 98 z28's have 285 at the wheel? i
Aklaim 05-01-2003, 12:05 PM That sounds about right. The 98's seem to be a tad less powerfull than the 99+ cars. Even some 99's have lower numbers than most 00+ cars. But your best bet is to put your car on a dyno and see what kind of power its actually making.
danziger 05-01-2003, 12:53 PM An SS won't make better dyno #s than a Z28 unless it was ordered with the less-restrictive SLP exhaust. Most dyno sheets I've seen of 98 automatics are in the 280-290 range. IMO, this is due to the exhaust manifolds and less than optimal ECU tuning.
