budget computer is moving right along now

Got the new board back from an RMA from Newegg. The last one had poltergeists I think.

Anyway, I couldn't be happier...right now I am running:

SL75FRN-L
XP1700+ pushed all the way to 2800+ (so far)
166mhz FSB 13.5 multiplier, 1.825 core voltage
Coolermaster all copper sink (the one with the heatpipes)
1gb twinmos DDR400 (2 x 512)
ATI Radeon 9500 PRO with omega drivers running at 351core and 297 mem (conservative but very stable)
450 watt dual fan PSU

CPU external temp sits happily at 44C under testing load (3dmark 2001 SE)

Not bad for a $50 cpu and a $90 mainboard eh? I don't know if I have hit the top yet either. Think I could push any further?

That's pretty darn good. That coolermaster must really work if you are overclocking that much and are only at 44C CPU temp. I am running at default settings and my CPU is at 48C. My MB is at 29C.

I might have to check out that coolermaster.

Yeah, it normally idles around 33C..I am very impressed with it.

I also picked up another 300 points since that last post :)

I am working on inching up my FSB and moving my multiplier down

I am pretty happy with the setup...especially considering I opted for the less expensive vid card. Makes me tempted to pick up a 9700 or 9800 and sell this one to see what the system can really do...

It looks like I am going to have to start overclocking and see if I can hit the 16k or 17k range.

I might have to invest in one of the water cooling kits to really crank up the speed. :D

I forget, which processor did you get?

Oh, and this is that motherboard I linked you to when you were shopping for parts. I am guessing my MB and CPU cost less than just your CPU :)

As an aside, I just saw an ad for 2700+ going for $189 in which case I got the board, processor, and cooler for less and am going faster :D

I got the 2700+ for $250 with the 3 year AMD retail warranty.

Are you running the ASUS A7N8X motherboard? If so, you might actually run faster with 333Mhz RAM instead of the 400 because then everything would be "in sync" at the same speed.

FYI, I am running at roughly the same 3d mark scores as the one you posted in here but haven't tweaked anything.

You are definitely correct in that you spent less than I did on the components, but I wanted to spend a little extra to get some of the additional features such as USB 2.0, firewire, gigabit LAN. But for the money I spent, I actually got 2 new computers, because I took all my P4 parts and gave them to Laura and upgraded her from a P2/400 to a P4/1.4Ghz.

This is that Soltek SL75FRN2-L Golden Flame board. It has a 333mhz bus and dualDDR. I have the ram set to match the bus speed. I do have USB 2.0 but no firewire (I don't have nor have I seen any firewire peripherals that needed....yet)

The major differences:

CPU: Mine 2163 Mhz Yours 2255 Mhz
3d Mark: Mine 14531, Yours 14445

Mine is faster in some tests, and yours is faster in others. Which tests are the most important?

Not sure which ones matter, they all test different things. Does make me even more curious about getting a 9700Pro myself and trying it out. I see they have 9800 Pro out, but it doesn't look to be that much different for the extra money
