16x8 2002 firebird wheels don't fit 96 Z28? WTF?

Ok...just got some takeoff firebird 16x8 oem wheels from SLP. Shop just called and said they don't fit onto the rear hub? WTF? Can anyone explain this?

Here's the page to the wheels I purchased.

Maybe the shop is clueless? Should be straightforward!

the shop is right, they don't fit. Most people just clearance them with a grinder.

They fit up front just fine. I have '01 T/A wheels that I have all the way around for autocrossing. You need to take a dremel to the rear wheels (T/A wheels of course) and lightly grind the hub opening a little larger-it's very easy to do and only a little bit needs to be ground off. I did it myself and it doesn't affect wheel balance or cause any funny vibrations.

I had the same exact problem. Go buy a dremel or dremel type tool and grind out a little of the rear-center part of the rims. If u plan on rotating the tires in the future, mind as well do all 4 of the rims!

This WILL solve your problem. Good luck

Thanks guys!

I have a half round file with a bastard grind that should do the job nicely.

I didn't expect having to do this. I'm just happy it's a relatively easy fix.

What year were the wheels? Newer T/A wheels are meant for a smaller rear hub.

The wheels would have to be 2001 or newer. That's when this design was introduced I think. I may give SLP a call tomorrow since they are saying that they should fit 93 or newer models.

I have clearenced many sets of wheels for my 96.

I have done some with a air grinder, some with a dremel and a dome with a round file.

All will work. Our wheels are lug centric and not hub centric therefore there is absolutely no problem with cutting out that groove in the back of the wheel.

One more question....

How much material do I need to remove? The whole lip where the hub goes into the wheel? I mean the lip where the "excess material is. Or maybe just half of the lip?

This could take a while....

Probably about half the lip...but I did just enough to get the wheel on.

I would grind then test...grind then test.

You shouldn't need to grind hardly anything off. Like All Z Way I just ground off enough to get it on-which is almost nothing.

Good...'cause I'm through 3 of 4 wheels and it's starting to wear on me... No pun intended.

OK, now you all have me curious?
I just bought some take offs from SLP (tires/wheels) for my 1995 T/A.
Are the T/A hubs possibly different? Meaning, if SLP says the wheels will fit all 1993-2002 cars, do they mean just the T/A's?

I have not test fit my wheels yet, but you all have me thinking! What do you all think?
