I went to milan saturday and was furious that I only got two runs in. The car is a 02 z28 A4 with a whisper lid, and k&n, but otherwise stock.
First run was a 13.43 @ 104.4 mph on a 2.07 60 ft.
Second run....the new best was a 13.28 @ 105.6 mph on a 2.02.
Maybe with a cutout 12s will be closer, but Im very happy for a stock car.
Then that night a friend called us to run his supra, and I drove 20 miles to meet him. We must have done 10 good runs, and the z held it off til about 55-60 until he started crawling ahead. The supra was definitely faster, but he had a ton of mods on his list. I was pleased with the results of a stock z, and just needed a set of headers to keep up a little better. All in all it was a great day of racing.

Nice times!
That sucks only getting 2 runs in.
Ever thought of heading north of the border?
At Grand Bend or St Thomas you can get all the runs in you want.

My only problem with driving that far is the rear end thing. Eventually a 12 bolt will solve my worries, but until then Ill have to stick close to home.

Right now I think you have nothing to worry about!:)
Led Zepplin sings "It sure is stronger than I'm told"
They were singing about our 10 bolts;) :p
Dave (Rock1501) has been pulling 1.7 and 1.8 on DR's for years in his 96 Z28.
Last year he stepped up to ET streets an pulls 1.6's on the stock 10 bolt
I have been beating on mine for over 6 years(best 1.92) knock on wood.
Just don't bolt up the slicks at a well prepped track:eek:

Dont worry about it the stock 10 bolt is stronger than you think.I know a few people who get low 1.5`s on the stock 10 bolt. With your auto it is even less of a shock to it.
Dont waste your money on a 12 bolt till you get more power and use slicks:)

I have went 1.55 with 10" Hoosier slicks with my A4 and expect to get into the 1.4X's this year on the same tiny 7-5/8". I hve no need nor money to replace it with a heavier/costlier 12 bolt until ABSOLUTELY needed.
NOW... there are a few tricks to long life, imho!!:
1) I run 85/140 synthetic gear lube. The heavy weight helps cusion the ring/pinion gear shock to a slight degree.
2) I run a T/A girdle and had the axle tubes welded to the center section. This reduces ring gear deflection. Also the T/A cover allows for a slight adjustment of pressure to the main bearing caps and also allows 1/2 qt. more fluid holding ability.
3) Set the ring/ pinion gear lash TIGHT. I think DSW set mine at
.008. This also allows less room for the teeth to get a running start into each other and reduces fracturing. A little noise for more strength.
4) Use a Raytech Pinion Bushing instead of a crush sleeve. A crush sleeve can stll move around a little due to it's rather fragile material. This allows the pinion gear also to do some slight adjusting on it's own and this is a BAD thing.
5) For drag racing only, this year, I had an open carrier's spider gears welded to the carrier. This, in effect, made the carrier a spool, meaning both tires will spin at the same rate, ALL the time.
This eliminates a small amount of weight and rotating mass, eliminates clutches/cones that may not apply correctly upon launch, allowing one tire to spin slightly.
6) When rebuilding or changing gears I always have a master bearing set installed. This keeps all the bearings fresh and working at top ability.
7) I like Precision Gear and GM Motive as my makers of gear sets, but... this is and all is my personnel opinion.
I credit a lot of fellas on this boad for helping me make intelligent/proven decisions, on how to make a 7-5/8" rearend survive the riggers of good, neck snapping launches. Dan from Hasslet and Hot Rod Hawk, just a few that come to mind. I hope theses PROVEN ideas are of some benefit to you and you can lead a happy life with your stock 10 bolt. :D
