By reading posts on this board, I believe my synch's on 3rd are out of whack. What are these and how would I go about having a shop fix em without them charging me for work that didnt need to be done?? Is it something I can change myself??

Transmissions work is not easy and not something you want to try yourself. You'll end up paying more in parts and tools than you would simply getting someone experienced to fix it.
If one syncro is gone more than likely the first two are wearing down as well. I believe it doesn't cost much more to get all of them replaced.
Expect to pay around $800 to $1000 for the repair. Parts and labor. Find an experienced and recommended transmission shop. Call up performance shops and ask them what shops they recommend for transmission work. Invariably there will be one shop in your area that will be highly recommend.

What are the signs of synchros going bad?

Generally speaking a crunching noise when shifting or difficulting shifting. If it's popping out of 3rd or 4th gear that could be a sign of a bad synchro or a bad shift fork.
If it is popping out of gear just pay a shop to open it up and repair whatever if needed. The shift fork should be upgraded anyways as long as you have the tranny open and he will be able to see if the synchros are bad while he's at it.

Okay, I was curious because I just got my 2000 T/A. Shifting into first it often vibrates rather violently...is that normal?

Can you elaborate? Is this during power shifts? Going from idle to first and then milding accelerating? Does it always happen regardless? Does it make any noises?

Usually the slower I shift, the worse it is. Yes, under mild acceleration. When power shifting, I don't notice it. It is not always noticeable.

Hmmm, hard to say. Is it the tranny shacking or the whole car? Have you ever done any driveline work to your car? Could be a bad tranny mount. When you slam on the gas do you hear or feel a loud THUD or does your shifter handle raise up a lot? Doesn't sound like an internal tranny problem.
At high speeds do you get any vibrations?

I think its mainly the shifter that vibrates.
It's under an extended warranty, and I'm going to take it in next week because the lights flicker slightly, so I'll just go ahead and ask them to look at that too.

Yes..... If my car came with a 1 month engine/transmission warranty wouldn't synchros be covered in that??
Sounds like Chupa is experiencing chatter in the clutch? Or poor engine performance low end shaking the mounts and such..i.e. tune up stuff?
zman if th trans guy determines the syncos are going bad maybe get the carbon fiber ones to put in and personally if I had trans problems and was tearing it down I would do everything possible while in it.The fork and such w/ the syncros seals any gears that dont look so good whatever.
When mine finally go I want the carbon fibers put in there. And will have them change any questionable parts.
