Engine Mods: Possible to do w/out pulling motor?

I have some money to put into my 00 SS and want to do some engine work. My best friend is an ASE cert. mechanic and said that the computer tells them that you have to drop the engine out to do any work such as heads, cam, intake, etc. Is there any way to do things like that without dropping the engine?

Tell your ASE mechanic to go back to school! You can turn your "00 SS into a 450 rwhp monster all from the top end. Hey, if I can do it, anyone can! But, you need to take your time and you need to get educated before you take on this task. I agree with blkss01 in his reference. I used many. Literally any project you want to take on can be found on the internet. I learned how to change out heads, cam, fuel pumps, suspension, etc. etc. all from my buddies on this forum and the internet. I started researching it last October, did the mods between Nov. and Feb., now I have a car that's almost "out of control"! It's a bit scary to drive...biggest problem now is traction.....but, that was my goal. You can do it too. Good luck!

I've done engine re-builds and ect before, but just on older cars. How hard is it to do a new intake on the LS1? I'd like to pick up the LS6 intake for mine.

The LS6 intake swap is not difficult at all, though it took me longer than the 1 1/2 to 3 hours that most most forums claim. Be careful to torque the manifold exactly per spec's. Also, I highly recommend following a how-to guide such as: http://www.ls1howto.com/. No sense in reinventing the wheel. You'll be happy with the results of this mod, easily +22rwhp and 15ftlb of torque. Not bad for an afternoon's worth of wrenching!
