So what does removing your EGR and shutting it off in Tunercat buy you, assuming you don't have to worry about emissions testing. Just curious. Thanks.

Why remove EGR???roguedriver 04-03-2003, 04:43 PM So what does removing your EGR and shutting it off in Tunercat buy you, assuming you don't have to worry about emissions testing. Just curious. Thanks. Ken R 95Z EviLBoX 04-04-2003, 09:59 AM Nothing from the performance stand point. All th EGR does is send exhaust back into the intake manifold to reduce emissions. Even then it only opens occasionally while cruising, it shuts off at wide open throttle. PoorMan 04-05-2003, 01:40 AM I removed mine because is it suspected to cause the common intake oil leak with that hot pipe next to the back of the intake. Jeff D. turbo_Z 04-06-2003, 03:00 AM #1 i dont have emissions testing... i took mine off because it has been known to cause a low RPM stumble/mis... dunno how it could cause an intake leak. it is also somewhat unsightly along with the AIR system so i removed them both at the same time and then disabled the code in tunercat. but performance wise it will do nothing for you. i just didnt like seeing it:cool: thumpinTA 04-07-2003, 12:30 PM does this not raise the temp of the air going into the cylinders? I thougt that is why people did that? PoorMan 04-07-2003, 04:29 PM The egr pipe goes into the back of the intake on my car. Their is a notched out part of the intake manifold rear seal that is very thin so the pipe can clear. With the egr pipe getting close to 700 F it melts the rtv causing a leak. At least that's what people think. I have a pic of this notched out area in my sig that I took after removing my intake. Jeff D. Super Slow '97 04-10-2003, 10:20 AM I believe they say the EGR will acually lower the combustion temperatures. David96Z 04-10-2003, 09:48 PM Originally posted by Super Slow '97 I believe they say the EGR will acually lower the combustion temperatures. That is exactly what the EGR does. It recirculates exhaust gases in the Intake Manifold to lower the combustion temperature and reduce emissions. I deleted mine due to it causing rough idle. ablackcamaro 04-10-2003, 11:20 PM Like said above, the EGR actually lowers the cylinder temperatures to reduce NOx. At first it seems that by putting in hot exhaust gases into a cylinder you'd raise the temperatures, but those gages are inert and do not burn with the combustion process, therefore less intake charge is burned and the cylinder temperatures drop. An obvious loss of power, but the computer shuts off the EGR system at WOT anyway. The only reason I can see deleting the system is if it needs to be replaced and you don't care about emissions, it won't make your car quicker by getting rid of it. JSK333 04-11-2003, 02:50 PM Another reason to remove it is just to clean up the engine bay, drop a BIT of weight, etc. Also, some headers don't have provisions for it. And, if you have a cam with a good bit of overlap, they tend to provide the same effect the EGR system provides. So then it becomes unnecessary. | ||
