zx1216 03-31-2003, 05:59 PM i have a 79' z-28 with a 350 bored .60 over speed pro domed pistons(10.3-1 comp.), ported 76 cc heads, torquer 2 intake manifold, matching cam(.488 lift 292 duration), 600 cfm carb, long-tube headers, True 2.5" duals with cross-over. The car has the m-21, 4-speed trany and 4.10 gears in the rear-end.
What kind of numbers will i put down in the 1/4? assuming i can drive well and get traction. How much hp is this combo worth?
 thanks
Nick:bow:
zx1216 03-31-2003, 08:32 PM Any guesses?
Capn Pete 03-31-2003, 09:32 PM Well, I'll "guesstimate" for ya;)................I see no reason that, if driven right (and with good traction:rolleyes: ) you can't pull off at least a low 13 or a high 12:think:. Maybe faster? Maybe slower??
............but that's my best "guess"!?
My dad's '73 is running similar components (less overbore, a little more cam, dual plane intake, 750 Edelbrock, currently only 3.42's) and we're hoping for something in the 12's............not sure exactly what though?! In a couple weeks it should be road ready (http://www.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101207).
69camaro383 04-01-2003, 11:32 AM If your a good driver and you hook up high 12's. You need a bigger carb. But other than that good setup. Good Luck.
CHPshown67 04-01-2003, 04:02 PM Definately a bigger carb:cool:
cadjock 04-01-2003, 07:35 PM As a 79 Camaro owner with a bit better specs, I'm gonna guess 13.5@100 (assuming street tires).
Let us know who's closest!
Zedzag 04-01-2003, 10:10 PM 14 something with lots of tire spin on street tires. No way is it gonna go 12s without better heads and bigger carb

Nah, it'll go faster than 14's:cool:. My '81 ran a 14.214 @ 97 mph BREAKING DOWN at the track:rolleyes:. It was leaning out hard-core, so it wouldn't rev over ~4500 rpm, when it should have revved to ~6000 rpm +.
My 383 (in the '81) had flat-tops, 76cc chamber heads, .480/.480 hydraulic cam, stock Quadra-Jet (stock for an '80 Z28), headers, auto, 3.42 gears, and STREET TIRES:p. It cut a 2.0 60' time, but it all went to $h!t after that:rolleyes:. If it was running right, it should have run mid-low 13's IMO. If Nick's got a 4-speed, 4.10's, and knows how to drive, he should be cutting a high 12 at least IMO:cool:.
The only way to resolve this is to take the car to the track!!!!:D
Zedzag 04-02-2003, 07:19 PM He may be able to hit mid 13s with GOOD traction but with street tires and 4.10s he"ll spin his way to a low 14(seen it before) High 12s? Better use some et streets. A 2.0 60' is not good enough IMO. But enough bench racing and take it to the track:D I hope you prove me wrong...its been done before:p
My 81 did the exact same thing on its 13.1 run. It leaned out so bad and coughed and popped its way down the track due to a basically stock fuel system. I wonder what it will run with my new blue pump and braided fuel line?;)
CHPshown67 04-02-2003, 07:23 PM Enough with the speculation! Just go to the track and run the damn car:mad:
87IROC-Zowner 04-02-2003, 10:43 PM Early Camaro's are heavy. Good luck pulling better than a 13.5.
My '68 Camaro with 350 / 305 heads and a mild cam, TH-400 tranny, and no idea on rear gears (probably 3.20ish) ran a 10.2@72 mph at the 1/8 mi. track on street tires and no spinning. It was cutting out (damn cheap HEI internal parts) and wouldn't rev past 5000 RPM's, but was quite a bit slower than my stock 305 IROC.
406TA 04-05-2003, 10:36 AM I'll guess high 13's with proper tuning and traction. I had a '79 Camaro w/ a junkyard 400 (added cam, intake, headers), with dead stock heads and ran 13.8 @ 100. That was several years after I beat on it so it was probably a mid 13 second car when I first had it. I ran that time with a stock open rearend and 2.73 (?) highway gears. Good luck.
Capn Pete 04-05-2003, 11:49 AM Whoa, nobody is giving your setup enough credit:o. The only thing holding you back IMO is your 600 cfm carb --- you need at least a 750 IMO. Otherwise:
350 bored .60 over --- that's a 360 c.i. engine
speed pro domed pistons (10.3:1 comp) --- good compression ratio
ported 76 cc heads --- smaller chambers would give you a higher CR, but the 76's will work OK
torquer 2 intake manifold --- single plane, right? it'll like the high revs, but that's OK;)
matching cam(.488 lift 292 duration) --- hydraulic or solid? even still, that's healthy enough lift
600 cfm carb --- should be 750 IMO:think:
long-tube headers, True 2.5" duals with cross-over --- what more do you need?!;)
M-21 4-speed and 4.10 gears --- :bow:gold buddy, gold!:bow::D
Now, all you need is TRACTION:rolleyes:. A set of "trac-bars" and GOOD TIRES, and you're running a LOW 13 at least, and more likely a 12.something;). Again, with lower compression, less lift on the cam, higher gears, and BREAKING DOWN, my '81 was already running a low 14. If I resolved my issues (carb), it would have been a mid-low 13 second car. Your's is a 12 second car IMO:cool:.
Zedzag 04-05-2003, 03:59 PM A buddy of mine ran 13.2 in his 80z. 350c.i. with 11:1 slugs ,ported 882s(76cc),.480 lift cam,1.6 rockers, air gap rpm,650 dp,3000 converter,4.10s ,long tube 1 3/4 headers, and ET Streets. All he could do is 13.2s at sea level. Tons of traction here. This guy knows how to tune his car and was very consistant. He since put on edelbrock performer rpm heads and a comp xe284 cam and now runs 12.6-12.4s:D
Good luck:cool:
zx1216 04-05-2003, 04:43 PM Thanks for all the replies, I would just go to the track but the nearest one to me is about 120 miles away. With the 4.10 gears i'm not too fond of hwy driving. I might go some time this spring when all of the new damn snow melts. So do any of u guys think i would feeel the diff. if i got a 750 carb? Which one do you recomend?
blue 79 Z/28 04-06-2003, 06:17 PM well, heres what i did. 350 .030 over, 9:1 comp, holley 700cfm dp, 10"3000 stall, crane hyd. .480/.485 230/235 at .050, 28x10 slicks, ported 441's, extremly under geared 3.42's for those slicks, ran a 13.2, and on 215/70/15 street tires it was a 13.5 no traction at all esp with the converter! ps. my motor dynoed at 375bhp at 5700rpm and 401lb ft at 4200rpm, that was engine dynoed. with the 4.10's and the slicks, im gonna see if i can smash into the 12's with the old combo before i add all my mods. p.s. i was running the traps at 4500rpm wow! lol now with the 4.10's it will be pulling at 5200rpm thats a difference of pulling with 330hp at 4500rpm and 370hp at 5200rpm, should make a big difference in the top end. i see 12's in my future with that combo =) oh and my heads flowed the same numbers as a set of vortec's with bigger valves, mines got the 2.02/1.60's in it. ( i know this cuz they were flowed too)
