Polishing Fuel Rails

Polishing Fuel Rails
I've got them off the car, and am working on polishing them. Unfortunately, they've got some kind of hard black spots on them, kind of like grains of salt. The polish isn't taking it off, and I don't want to use anything to scrape them off, so I'm wondering what I can do about it????
It doesn't seem to be pitted as I can scratch the deposits off.

all I did was use a rag and some aluminum polish, and some elbow grease

Well, I take it back. I think it is pitting, because even a scotch brite pad isn't taking it off. It looks ok from a distance, but I know it's there and I don't like it.
I'm using that blue magic stuff, and it works great. But it doesn't take care of pitting.

Using sandpaper, in increasingly finer grits, will polish just about anything. Once you get to about 600 to1000 grit, switch to a good polishing compound.
I did a set of Baer aluminum calipers (not a very good writeup, but might get you pointed in the right direction):

this is somehting i have always wondered.....every set of fuel rails i have messed with polished right up with some mothers aluminum polish and a rag in seconds. i see 'polished fuel rails' in people's sigs and always wondered why they would put something that comes done (look at pics of the car new and you will see they came nice and shiney). maybe after the car sits up north for a while or something they get seriously oxidized/corroded or something.
