Hood Vents On Stock Hood

Hood Vents On Stock Hood
Hey! I was just got thinking and was just wondering if it would be possible/safe to cut holes in a stock '96 V6 hood where the fake air vent thingys are. I was thinking of taking the fake black grill pieces off and use those as a stencile and cut it out with a dremel and then fill the space in with a chrome grill. Would this be safe for the car and the engine? I dont plan on hooking up a ram air system up to it, so basically for looks only. But maybe it would help cool off the engine a lil bit??
Has anyone done/tryed this before?
Thanks,
Dustin

I was just thinking this the other day but I think I am going to go the exact same way w/ the ss style hood. I am running the K&N FIPK so the hoods not ram air functional. I would think that as long as water is not going to be getting into your engine bay, you should be fine. Plus the added air flow should only help things right? Your hood is steel where as mine's fiberglass, but I can't see how this mod would really hurt anything. Post up some pics if you do this!
Good luck.
Good luck.

Yea I didnt think about the rain part. But the computer isnt water-proof??? I better keep the water away from it next time I'm cleaning the engine bay, haha.

Re: Hood Vents On Stock Hood
Yea I would not do it either because of the following reasons:
1) You risk getting water in the engine area and ruining something
2) Since the hood is steel and you cut it out you might end up causing the
hood to rust over time.
3) When driving down the interstate, you are forcing a lot of air in and it
could cause a vacuum line to blow off. Then that will be a mess trying to
figure out which one it is and fix it.
However, there is still hope if you a billett grill. A while back, I remember seeing someone with the billett grill inserts in there stock hood. It looked very good and clean. I would start by trying www.rksport.com and also do a seach in the forum. Good luck.

Re: Hood Vents On Stock Hood
I did it about 5 years ago also......Like you said, mainly to let off a little heat while sitting in the staging lanes at my local drag strip. I regret doing it now because they do leak when it rains. The water SOAKS the hood liner really bad.
