Gauge Installation

Hello all, I recently bought two auto meter gauges for my 95 z28 and I can't find an opening in the firewall to pass the Fuel Pressure line and the Wideband line through. Can anyone suggest a location or guide me as to where to try? I'm also willing to drill through the firewall but I can't find a good location.

Re: Gauge Installation

The largest opening is the big rubber grommet behind the PCM. See this writeup from Shoebox:

http://shbox.com/fw/Firewall_wire_feed.html

You indicate you are passing a fuel pressure gauge line through the firewall. Hopefully you mean you are passing a wire for an electronic fuel pressure gauge through the firewall. Running a fuel line inside the passenger compartment is not a smart thing to do. NHRA does not permit it. And the high pressure isolator form AutoMeter is not reliable at all.

If you want a location on the driver's side of the firewall, I can post a picture of where I drilled a hole.

Re: Gauge Installation

Thanks Fred, you were correct, the gauge I have is mechanical; I'll be mounting it somewhere under the hood.

I will place a digital one inside of the cabin, something like:

Please do post the picture(s) you have, I saw the link that you gave me, I just do not have enough wire for that. I would like to go through the driver side firewall.

Re: Gauge Installation

I drilled a hole in mine, somewhere behind the knee panel under the steering wheel I was able to get a long drill bit in there, it was a real PITA but it came out to the right of the brake cylinder. I only hade to remove the knee panel, to do it.

You might want to buy a long drill bit at lowes if it will help,

Re: Gauge Installation

Yeah I have the drill bits. A small cordless drill, but I'm having a PITA with the location of creating a hole, and on how to get the drill into the location I choose.

Re: Gauge Installation

Look at the black grommet, with the red wire, and a few others going to it:

I drilled the hole from the passenger compartment side. Pull the carpet down, and the hole location is fairly close to the hard rubber piece that holds the top of the carpet, as I recall (I did that 15 years ago.......). Reference the location from the brake pedal, since the location is between the rod from the pedal to the brake booster, and the large harness connector on the firewall.
