Anyone had their car painteD?

Hey guys, pretty new here. Picked up a 93 z hardtop m6 couple weeks ago and its pretty much a project. Its black and its faded terribly, will most definately need a paint job. Carpet wreaks and Ill probably be looking to replace that and headliner is gone. I was kinda wondering what kinda prices/quotes you guys have seen to get these fbodys repainted. Is getting it painted a different color a really big cost? Ive always wanted a red camaro, but the car is black. Kinda want it to be red but kinda want it to be original. Just wondering on what kinda prices Id be looking at, thanks.

I got a 95 3.4 painted 2 years ago by maaco. They were running a half off sale so i got the 3rd step out of 4. It cost me about 1500 after the sale price. IMO, it wasn't worth it. A stock paint job is about 5 layers i believe and the one I got was 3 (primer, color, clear). It chips really easy and scratches easy as well. It looks great but is not as durable as stock. To get a stock paint job is around 5K. I baby the hell out of it and there is still some damage

I got my whole car painted last month for $1500 and thats was with all mid to high end ppg products. I went to a reputable local bodyshop and asked if any of their painters were looking for some side jobs, one was. The cool thing was all the work was done at the shop after hours, yeah it took about a month to do but with the shop rate the paint job would have been closer to $3500 so I didnt mind the wait, he also did a lot of little stuff like shaving the attenna and painting the berger panel black.
The cooler thing is me and my painters son became friends and he has been taking me in his '69 Chevy and showing me all the local shows etc since I'm new around here.
So I say find some one good who wants a side job and go from there.

I got my SS hood and front bumper painted by a local guy about 4 years ago for $500 and it was the worst paint job I have ever seen. I wouldn't let this guy paint my lawn mower. Then the next year I was in a wreck and had to get the whole car painted. I also had to replace the front bumper and drivers side fender. There was some very minor damage done to the rocker panel and quarter panel too. I stripped everything I could off of the car; mirrors, badges, door handles, spoiler, etc, and replaced the bumper and fender myself. i went to another body shop this time, excellent painter, cars in magazines, and he did a great job. The total was around $2200 I think for the body work and the paint job. The car still looks great to this day and I saved several hundred dollars by doing as much as I could on my own. I would definitely recommend doing it that way.
