Thumbs up 93-96 Camaro console lid repair

Has anyone tried to fab a new hinge for their console lid on the 93-96 Camaro's. I fabbed one up for mine last night, usind a piece of 26 ga galvanized metal, metal snips, a bench vise hammer and a dremel. I works well and seems durable but has a little side to side wobble when up. I'm not sure what an unbroken hinge looks like since I bought my car with mine broken, but if any one knows of any attempts at fixing these please post. I have pics of my fix but no web space to host the pic. Maybe we can all put our heads toether and come up with a durable solution (besides the console upgrade) .

wow that's a great idea. I didnt know the newer ones opened sideways. Once mine breaks off completely (only half broke now) I'll make it open sideways.

Its not hard at all. I just changed mine on sunday. It took me about an hour to do. The LS1 dash doesn't fit snugly on the carpet up by the cig lighter/extra cupholder part of the console. I did not know it would do that before i put it in. I knew about the gap under the radio but i thought the console would fit around the center hump perfectly. The LS1 console is also taller than the Lt1's consoles.

Exclamation Updated my page

Alrighty...I updated my page with the pic and write-up from Bralgar. Here's the link here. Or you can go to page six of the link in my sig for my Camaro.

As for changing out the Camaro console, the newer style...Camaro6, you said that the fitment at the front of the console isn't complely right. Is it something noticeable to someone else, or is it just something you would notice installing it? Got a pic??

you can just fill the gap under the carpet with some sort of padding. the gap was only an inch or so on the passenger side of the console.

So you just put the padding under the carpet so that the carpet comes up to meet the console? That doesn't sound that bad at all! I also have heard something about an older Ford part that can fill the gap perfectly where the console meets the dash...

Isn't the 93-96 console lid too tall to open sideways towards the passenger seat?

I'm sure something could be fabricated to make it work

i don't think that the 93-96 lid could be made to open sideways because of the angle of the front of the lid. Also, the lock on the front would have to be relocated.

that is exactly what i did. you don't have to put much padding at all. just enough to push the carpet out and inch or so.

the gap between the console and the bottom of the radio is about 2 inches. I left it open because it is not that bad of a gap, but you can put one of those trays from an older stang that goes under the radio.
