9006 HID bulb
So is there any reason why I cannot just put a 9006 HID in my 1993 headlight housing?

nope, you can even put HIDs

I did 9006's in my low beams and 9005's in my highs AND 9006's in my fog lights (with some triming around the opening) Pick up some silicone adhesive if you dont already have some before installing.
