Post ZZ4 in my 86 Z28??? Will this work? All input inside!

Well guys, basically, after doing all the math and trying to figure out which would be easier on my wallet, I have decided to buy a ZZ4 for the Z, rather than some goodwrench service motor and then adding all kinds of other crap to it.

My main concern is whether or not I can get this motor to pass smog in California. My Z has a 4bbl 305 in it right now. If I swap manifolds and add oh say an Edelbrock Performer EGR intake and my stock Q-jet, coupled with a new AIR pump and all the injection fittings on my headers and cat.... Do you guys see any problem??? I know that this motor is for use with pre-76 vehicles only, but if I add all the smog accesories, won't it be just like any old smallblock?

I decided on the ZZ4 because it is such a popular motor. It has very good compression(more than I need) and is a very good platform for me to put some performance into the Z. I really don't wanna get a service motor.

Have any of you done this swap? Well, any help would be appreciated guys! Thanks!

Will

well, I think it would pass. but if not, then you could put a more emissions type cam in topass the test. whats the cam specs on that eng.? there's really nothing else in that eng. that would cause it to have high emissions besides that.

The ZZ4 is, and can be emissions legal. GM sells a kit, or you can purchase the components seperately. It has a new chip for the ZZ4, different hangers and metering rods for your stock Qjet carb, and some different exhaust pieces. I am not sure if it is 49 state legal, or legal in all 50. Places like Jim Pace, & SDPC sell these motors and kits. You can find the exact answers to your questions through any GMPP dealer. Hope this helped.

Ya guys, that helped alot! I had originally planned on going with GM's 350HO upgrade kit for 82-92 F-bodies who came with a 305 4bbl setup. Its pretty pricey from what I understand, but the only reason that I am still leaning towards it instead, is because they sell the pcm and everything. I have no need for the exhaust that kit offers, I will provide my own system, but the main thing is the mods for the carb, and the PCM to make that 350 run in my car. I already have the dual snorkel air cleaner like they have, so i would only need the 350 itelf.... Oh well, if you guys have any other suggestions, please let me know!
Thanks

I used to have a flyer on the ZZ4, on the back was a complete list of part #'s for the ZZ4 conversion in an 82'-87' F-body. If I can find it, I'll post the part #'s for the chip, and carb parts.

just go to your local gm dealership. go into the parts department and get the 2002 catalog. it's in there. pg 41 part #10185077 on www.gmpartsdirect.com the list is $6428.57. but they sell it for $4500.00 + shipping. not too bad really considering what you get.

You have to buy the whole kit for it to be smog-legal. You can sell the extra parts you dont need. A dual-snorkel air cleaner is a hot item.

Ya, so I hear. I picked one up here a few months back and slapped it on my 305. I sure can feel the difference. But anyway, I think I will go check out that catalog. 4500 plus shipping is not that bad. But if there was any way I could get it locally, that would help. But yeah. When i got to looking,I saw that the 350HO conversion kit infact uses the ZZ4 block. I had thought that it was a seperate model. Do you guys know off hand what kind of heads this setup comes with? I will try and make a trip by the local GM parts Department. I work for Nissan, so maybe they could cut me a deal??? Anyhow, I just wanted to know if they still use a cast intake or if its an aluminum version. In any case I still wanted to add the performer EGR manifold over theirs. With headers and 3" exhaust, what do you guys estimate a good 1/4 mile e.t.? They said that the setup, as it was listed, ran 13.8 or something like that. With a better intake, headers, exhaust, and I maybe some nitrous, would it be safe to assume I might have a 12 second ride? Well anyhow, thanks for all your help guys!

It uses the ZZ4 longblock...which has the aluminum L98 heads. It also has an aluminum dual plane GM intake. You would have a similar setup as me...I ran 13.91 @ 103.4 w/ a 625 cfm carter carb (w/ lots of tuning bugs), shorty headers and 3.42 gears. W/ some hook and better tuning the same combo could no doubt be in the low 13s.

Definately should be in the 13's on motor, 12's on a 125-150 kit no problem. I think that 13.8 quote from GM was even on street radials. I went to the Daytona leg of the HOT ROD Power Tour in 99' - GM had their booth set up and there was an 86' or 87' IROC w/ the ZZ4 conversion there. I got talking with one of the guys at the booth about the car and he said it ran 13.6 @ 105 on street tires. It had 3.73's. and a Flowmaster cat back besides the ZZ4 conversion.

Sweet , ya that was GM's '87 test car. Well, I think I am sold. I love the L98 heads. My main concern was that it was like the fast burn 385 and had those vortec heads. I don't like the vortec manifold, and figured i might run into some emmissions issues. but this is great. Well, time to start saving thoe pennies and dimes! Thanksfor all the help guys. If there is anything else you guys can think of, please let me know! I am also planning on doing some good suspension work, ie SFC's, LCA's, rebuilt front end with new bushings and all, and 3.73 gears(posi). Does anyone know how much a good used 3.73 posi rear would go for? I want one out of a same year preferably. i could rework it and all. Im not lookin to buy a new one, too much money! Well thanks guys!
