zexel-torsen differential anygood?
is it one of those you get what you pay for kinda things or is it worth it.im on the broke side right now.and how can you tell if a differential is good or not? meaning if you bought it from someone and you dont know if its messed up?

The Zexel-torsen difs have no clutches, The ones that SLP sells are just take offs from 4th gens that get the HD dif put in when they are modded to SS or Firehawk status.
Torsen diffs are very reliable and witout abuse they last the life of the vehicle.

Yours is holding up, and I've seen stock 4th gens scatter the rear end. Most of them will hold up fine, but the more horsepower you have, the closer you get to grabbing that short straw one of these times. You're pushing close to the 11s now, aren't you? That's impressive for a 7 5/8" rear, but I suspect that it's just a matter of time until you watch your axle roll past your door.
I guess it's the same situation as people's luck with T5s. Some guys can keep them together down into the 12s, and other guys grenade them with LG4s.
But for what it's worth, it's your good experience with that differential that convinced me to get it along with Moser axles instead of an Auburn diff.

The SLP limited slip from the 4th gen convervsion is a great buy as long as you have:
1) 10-bolt rear axle assy
2) 28 spline axle shafts
3) 3-series diff carrier
If you do not have the above its not going to work for you, so save the $99.

Jim,
It's like ANY product, be it a TV, a boat, or a computer. Some people have the best of luck and swear by a particular name brand, while others have one bad experience and curse that brand. It's the way of the world, in my opinion.
Whether I consider myself fortunate is irrelevant. The fact is though, that I've had absolutely no problems with my setup. And I should mention that Tim Burgess has had the same luck with his Zexel-Torsen and Moser axles. There is one difference between his and mine though. He has a T-5 and launches at 5,500 rpm -- talk about a shock load!! I launch my 700R4 from "only" 1,000 rpm so the shock load cannot compare with Tim's. What's even more amazing about Tim's setup is that his T-5 has never been out of the car. He's the original owner of his '92 Z28 and his car now has over 150k miles on it. BTW, he's already run high 11's with his 305. I must also mention that it's his daily-driver and is fully emissions compliant, just like mine.

Willie,
You have an amazing and beautiful Camaro
Of course, I've told you that several times now but it just needs repeating. That Camaro is a beautiful machine
What would be the most cost effective posi setup for my rear end though? It is a stock 2.73 1986 Sport Coupe drum rear that we changed to a 3 series carrier with 3.42 gears.
It seems that the 86s have 26 spline axles and can't use the $99 SLP units

5,500 rpm launches on an 11 second car with a 150k mile untouched T5. Wow! That's very impressive. Statistically, half of his car should be broken.
Hopefully I'll have the same kind of luck with my setup. I'm running a freshly rebuilt WCT5, Zexel & moser axles. I had planned on saving for a 9" after the T56 swap, but maybe I'll just put some money into c-clip eliminators and a stronger diff cover.

I appreciate you taking the time to say that. Thank you.

The way I see it, you have two choices. The first is to go with a Series II Auburn for about $300 and call it done. The second follows below.

....unless you upgrade to 28-spline axles!! But don't go with GM's because of the cost. They are about $300 each. Instead, why not go with Moser's, which are about 30 percent stronger than GM's and they run for about $240 per pair!!!
So the second choice is go with the $99 Torsen and $240 Moser's for a total of ~$350. In my opinion, the extra $50 is worth the cost. FYI, the Moser axles work with both drum and disc rears.

Tell me!! Impressive? I call it unbelievable. I've watched Tim launch time and time again since 1998. The guy flat knows how to drive!!

Let's all wish each other luck with this setup. As before, so far so good with mine. The longer mine lasts, the more convinced I am that this is THE setup to go with.

BTW, I do use an aluminum cover with the axle bearing support bolts.
