what mods for putting big block in a third gen?
Ok, not long ago i purchaced my car, a '92 Camaro Rs. It has the 305 tpi setup in it and at the time i was thinking of droping in a 350 just to add a little more umph to it. Well now ive had my car a while and ive been aspiring to bigger and better things. Now i would like to drop in a 496 or 540. I figured if i was going to put a new engine in, why not go dip into the big time cubic inches. So my questions would be first is this even possible. Do i have enough room under the hood to keep the beast? if i have to cut a hole in the hood that wont be a big deal. Second what modifications will have to be done such as strenghtening the frame its self as well as drivetrain components? I have a 5 speed manual transmition, not exactly sure what its called. Thanks in advance for any advice given.
Mitch

yes you can fit a big block under the hood of your car. there are plenty of books out there that dicuss this type of swap.take a look at the books they sell at summit. i will try and answer a few of your questons now.
you will have to get a better front suspension setup, you will need sub frame connectors, you dont have to cut your hood, and if you go big block then go 502 ram jet.

350 TPI, T56, 4th gen rear with 3.73, chrome SS wheels, Ed Wright chip, comp cams RR, SLP dual cold air kit, LT1 injectors and cam, MSD ign, NX wet kit, ported TPI setup, and much more.

A 496, 502 or 540 are all short deck blocks. The 502 and 540 have the same larger bore. The 540 just has a stroker crank. They all share the same external dimensions as a typical BBC. The web page mentioned above has all the info needed to drop in a BBC. If you go with a tall beck block then there may be additional clearance and fitting problems but 600+ CID are possible.
I'd like a 540 myself.
Your T5 tranny will have to go. GM didn't even put that tranny behind a 350 so it won't last behind a BBC.
My front suspension is still relativly stock. Even though I have a BBC with cast iron heads there's been a lot of weight stripped off the front of the car. The only thing I've changed to the front end are a set of Koni SPA1 drag struts and a set of V6 springs.
Good weld-in sub frame connectors are a requirement but then they should be on all third gens.
Your 92's 10 bolt is strong but a few modifications can make it even better without having to invest in a 12 bolt or 9". I've actually ran 11.2's at 121 mph with a 10 bolt but blew up an engine doing it.
