TPI or Carb?

I took out my V6 and put in a 5.7L TPI. I got it in and was in the middle of the wiring when i got the call to deploy to Afghanistan for 15 mos... While I was deployed my wife took everything and moved in with her new fiance' so i dont presently have any tools. I want my camaro back on the road as fast and practical as possible. I am considering going carb to skip the B.S. but I am inexperianced in carbs. What is envolved in just swapping over to a carb and giving this engine its three elements of life? Or should i attempt to take the time and complete my journey of the TPI? I need some R rated opinions/ suggestions. Thanks for your time to read/ respond this!!

If you want to go with a carb then you'll obviously need a new intake manifold (Edelbrocks Performer RPM should be all you look at). Beyond that depends on what the car has on it. You cannot use the fuel injection distributor - you'll need an older style vacuum or mechanical advance unit. The throttle cable and TV cable (for the 700r4) will need attention. Also, depending upon how you wire the engine, you may need to install a diode in the alternator circuit to allow proper ignition switch operation.

If you're working with a stock L98, automatic transmission and an economy minded gear you'll want a vacuum secondary carb, with choke, around 600cfm. Demon is recommended. Edelbrock will work but will require a lot down the road if the engine combo gets more aggressive.

What part of California are you in?

You say you are not comfortable with carbs, but are you familiar with TPI? If you're in SoCal I have all the tools and computers to tune it. I always recommend EFI over an antique and outdated carb, and TPI belongs in thirdgens.

I am in Lemoore, Ca near Fresno/ Hanford. I think that you are right that the TPI belongs in in the third gen and I think that I am going to take the extra time to finish what I started with the TPI. The carb seems a lot more work than I thought LOL>. What part of SoCal are you in? Borrowing anymore deployments in the future Im ready to get this done. Thx again for your time.

I'm in Orange County, near Disneyland, as my profile says next to my name.

You're a bit far away from most of us, but our SoCal club ( www.sc3g.org ) goes up to Famoso Raceway to drag race once a year or so.

I can do custom chips for our cars, if you're interested. I can also teach you how to do it yourself.

Carb is easy to do, i just did mine......(only if your car was a original tpi) but since u already have the tpi might as well keep it.......

Now if it was (tbi) get rid of it and do a carb swap....
