Little more power out of a little 305
I'd like to add some power to my 305 in my camaro. It does have a q-jet with electric choke. The only mods on the car so far is flowmasters. I'm not going to bore the engine nor am I gonna swap the 305 for a 350. It has an automatic and posi-trac. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

beng its a flat tapped your gonna have to pay close attn on break in. there are a few cams you can go with that will bump things up a good bit. that and headers will do wonders. i have a 10.41 comp 305 that i have alot of fun with and other than mayby changing to a better flowing head, im done with this motor.

First, get a dual snorkel air cleaner from a high output 305 car. Then drop some DR metering rods on the secondary side of the carb. These can be done cheap, less than $100 if you look around. Good for ~15hp and makes the engine/carb MUCH more responsive.
Then I would go with a set of shorty headers, y-pipe, and 3" catback. That will add another 25-30hp and will improve the sound.
Last, get an Edelbrock Performer RPM Qjet intake manifold (dont waste the money on the regular Performer Qjet). This manifold is a bit taller than stock and will require an L88 drop base for your aircleaner. Easily another 10-15hp.
All that should get you another 50hp, putting you just over 200hp.
Stock my car went a best of low 16s and struggled to beat modern 4 cylinder daily drivers. With all of the above, it went high 14s and was running with most of the 5.0s on the road at the time.

As always I reccomend. Sticky tires, 3000 stall converter, 100 shot of nitrous.
Those mods make any car a lot more fun.
Headers after that.
These mods are all external so you retain driveability, ie. Reliability. Getting into the engine will cause problems if you aren't experienced. Even a set of roller rocker arms can be an issue if done improperly and even if done properly it might cause enough new stress on the cam that it ruins it..
These mods can also be swapped to a new engine in the future.
My 305 held a 150 shot very well so a 100 shot will be fine with premium fuel. Goodluck!

Re: Little more power out of a little 305
My stock cammed 305 stalled at 3600 and shifted at 5500(severe valve float) and went 12.80@108+ mph. It had a holly 600 carb, intake, headers... funny thing is it still ran 15.60's @ 87mph on motor. The 100 shot alone added 20mph.
Less stall would have been ideal for sure but 3000+ rpm is ideal for nitrous activation. I used to spray that motor off idle with the stock converter though... it wouldn't give up!

Re: Little more power out of a little 305
The best I could ever get from my 305 was a 14.04 @ 101 MPH, and that took 24 hours of porting labor on the cylinder heads, a comp XE262H cam, a stall converter, 3.73 gears, lower control arms in the rear, an Edelbrock torquer intake manifold, Edelbrock headers, and a Hooker aerochamber cat-back exhaust.
So that stuff for about a thousand bucks, then add nitrous, like Denny recommends. Your 305 has a crank and mains that are as strong as any 350 2-bolt, and the pistons are hyperutectic. They can handle a 150 shot, no problem. The deal is that you want to open that exhaust valve a slightly longer duration than a 350 would require because the bore is smaller, shrouding that exhaust valve. I ran a 218/224 split profile on my cam, which seemed to work best. That'll get you the cheapest fun for your dollar. The E4ME carbeurator will work fine if you swap in the "DR" metering rods on , if I remember corectly, a type K hanger.
