Stalling in drive as soon as I step on gas.

I have a '92 Z28 with 305 and 700R4. I have the idle at 900 and drops to around 700 when I put it in gear and will keep in gear running at idle. As soon as I apply throttle it dies. If I rev the engine then drop it in gear it will keep running.
I set the TV cable and it seems fine. The engine was tuned a while ago but it hasn't been run in six months.
Any ideas?

Some additional info. It is a TPI 305. I bought it from a friend's son today. They said it was having this problem and they stopped driving it in Jan. They said the engine was tuned up last summer. The problem existed before it sat for 6 months. It starts right up, idles nice, revs good and drops into gear OK. The trans fluid is full and only slightly dark but no "burnt" smell to it. I will replace the fuel filter, I remember having those drive me nuts every six months on my Nova. I guess I ought to get an air filter while I am at it.

OK this is wierd. I went out tonight to show my wife what the problem was and the dang thing wouldn't do it. It was acting up this afternoon but not at night. Any kind of heat sensitive things that could cause this?
