New Carb or Rebuild

I've got an 87 TA with a rebuilt by Holley quadrajet carb. I bought that to replace the original because of massive hesitation. Over the years it's gone back down hill. I just tried to drive the car this weekend and it was very hesitant to respond. Does anybody know where I could send the carb I've got to be rebuilt? Or should I just go buy another rebuilt one? This one cost about $350 from hilo/oreilly. I need a cheap route so I can get my baby back up and going. Please help. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

Re: New Carb or Rebuild

Rebuilding carbs is easy. Well, qjets are a little tougher. Buy a book published by HP Books: Rochester Carburetors by Roe & fisher. You will know qjets inside out. Lot better than popping $$$ for new carbs.

Couple if tips: never disassemble the choke mechanism! A lot of manuals will tell you to do that 1st off. It's like a chinese puzzle to put back together. Also, no need to dip a carb. I just buy a can of carb cleaner and use that to blast out all the passages, and give the carb body a cleanup before reassembly. Keep all the old gaskets so you can compare to the gaskets in the kit. That way you can be sure you are using the right ones. Even a small difference can be huge.

Could you tell me a round about figure for cost if I do the work myself? Like for the kit or what not?

Re: New Carb or Rebuild

Carb kit and can of carb cleaner should be around 30 bucks. BUT you have to get correct kit. Best way is with factory number off carb. Early models had a small tag, but all later ones have it stamped on main body by the throttle linkage. It will be a 6 ot 7 digit #. I'm thinking even if it came via Holley, this would still apply, but you can e-mail Holley tech and ask to be sure.
