I haven't seen alot of info on the L98.

Alot of lt1 and ls1 talk...

in what way?

which one is better? well that depends on what you consider "better".

the L98s make stupid torque down low, and fall flat on their face in the upper rpm.

both can be modded into pretty respectable engines.

some will tell you the L98>LT1 based solely on the fact that the LT1 has the opti-spark....ie...opti-crap, opti-****...

From what i've read the L98 and LT1 both have problems with airflow it restricts them in the higher rpms, Right? but both produce good down low torque?

agreed.

although the LT1 makes better power up top than the TPI motors. you can make good power to 6000rpm on an lt1....good luck getting power much past 5000rpm on a tpi.

BUT, if the car is set up right that drawback isn't always a bad thing. it makes for a great street car. short races don't need much top end. and same thing for 1/8th mi tracks.

my old 87 IROC 305TPI would hurt feelings on the street in short races. but by the end of 2nd gear (if i remember correctly) if i wasn't ahead...i wasn't gonna GET ahead.

Most stock LT1 cars will walk a stock L98 car. However, some races are so close that it simply becomes a drivers race. A strong running Formula 350 with 3.27 gears and no options could quite easily outbest a tired LTI car with 2.73's.

l98-all low end torque no hp
lt1-some low end torque some hp
ls1-no low end torque all top end hp

It's like super mario bros 2 on the old nintendo when you could pick luigi that could jump the highest(l98 off the line) or toad man that ran the fastest(ls1 on the top end), or mario that didn't do anything the best and was kind of the middle ground.(lt1)

How's that for an analogy

wouldn't the l98 lend itself to better cruising mileage then?

I would say yes if they had a comparable transmission. Mine used to get 28 with the A4 and 3.23 gears on the highway at 70 mph.

With a 6 speed I wouldn't be afraid to say it would have gotten 30. This would have been when it was stock of course.

Your not taking into account, technology. The newer cars have better electronics and fuel system, therefore usually better mileage.

Ok, well then let's build a better highway cruiser with some mild performance numbers, aka Z28 305 GDI ///

An LT1 engine is basically an L98 engine with slightly better heads and a lot better intake manifold.

Upgrade the TPI intake manifold and put larger runners on it, or install an Accel SuperRam or Holley StealthRam, and you've got the same power as an LT1.

Wow. Best I can get with my 89 is about 22 if I coast down hill etc. Anyone else get exceptional mileage with an L98? Maybe I need to get after my tuning?

LT1=Mario
