LT1 cam in 1991 305 TPI ?

would putting a cam from a 1996 LT1 out of a Caprice into a 1991 305 TPI in an RS work? would it be worth it ? The motor is already apart.

Since the engine is already apart.....go for it !

In the B-body world, we refer to that cam as 'The Truck Cam'.

Why? Because it generates torque! Now, the TPI intake & long runners will do that as well.....but you are talking about the 305ci engine. That lil' puppy can always use a bit more help in the torque department.

You'll probably need to burn a new chip for the cam swap. I recommend PCMforless .....they have massive experience with the B-Body LT1 cam and with the TPI cars!

Good luck!

KW

EDIT: Forgot to mention.....you'll need to take out the dowel pin from the front of the cam......should be able to pull it out with a pair of pliers......

Re: LT1 cam in 1991 305 TPI ?

That little bitty 305tpi makes as much torque at the wheels as an lt1. An LT1 cam isnt going to do much over the L98 cam. The LT1 cam specs are not much improved over the L98 cam. All speed density tpi cars had the same L98 cam. My auto single cat 91 Trans am dynoed 187 HP/ 273tq. Not far from my brothers stock auto 97 t/a 230HP / 272tq. Just food for thought.

It makes that torque due to the long intake runners.....not due the the cam. The B-body LT1 generates that torque with runners that are less than 1/4 the length of the L98.

The B-body LT1 cam is very different from the F-body LT1 cam.....different duration, different lift, different lobe angles. You're not comparing the same thing with regards to your brother's car.

Just food for thought.......

That is a big difference.

Throw in the lt1 cam then post up the dyno numbers. I am very curious now.

Cool Re: LT1 cam in 1991 305 TPI ?

I am running this exact setup in my '86 Trans Am ('91 305 long block with LT1 cam). There is a noticable difference over the stock cam. I also have headers and a slightly modified '89 TPI tune. If the motor is apart and you've got the cam, go for it! BTW, my car club is having a dyno meet next month. I will post up numbers afterwards.

Re: LT1 cam in 1991 305 TPI ?

I know this is an old thread...

Would this swap make since for my 92 Firebird 305 with Throttle Body, not TPI?

Thanks
