LS1 Rearend Swap

Is this a pretty basic installation? I just bought lowering springs, will thesse work with this rear end? I'm getting 4th gen wheels, and i need a new rearend so i thought if i just did this i wouldn't need spacers in the back and I would kill two birds with one stone...All Ls1 rearends are posi right?? How much can a used one be bought for with low miles on it, just a ballpark figure would be great..

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

I hear that they'll bolt up, only there may be some fab work necessary with the rear discs. The width difference is 2 1/2 inches per side. I'm thinking about doing this swap myself too. thirdgen.org has some info on this.

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

oh yes i almost forgot about the disc brakes....i realiuze there will be some fabrication with brake lines and everything...this won't screw the rest of my braking system up will it? just hook up the lines and everything right? if I put a Ls1 rear in I won't need wheel spacers in the back if i'm going with 4th gen wheels right??? Also, they all have posi right?

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

if the rear is from a Z28, SS, T/A , Firehawk it should be posi unless some1 took it out,as for a rear from a V6 im not sure.

why do u want a LS1 rear,b/c u think its stronger? not necessarily. put the money toward the rear thats in your car now instead of paying...what...around 400 or so for another rear, and most likely your still not gonna have the gear ratio u want.

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

alright, maybe that'll be a better idea....i don't know what is wrong with my rearend, it doesn't make any noises, but it only pulls posi like on a drag race, but when i do a break torque its a one wheel wonder, it rarely is a one wheel wonder of a dead stop tho, but when it is, i get mad...I don't knwo much about rearends, does it just need to be rebuilt or what? I got a 700r4, and i'm prolly gonna get a 2800 stall, which gears should I get? When you put spacers on your hubs, does it make your handling and driving feel different? any input on what I need to get for my rearend to build it up a bit and get a higher gear ration will be appreciated, thanks..

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

wow, i looked into them, and they pretty much lost me after saying there is different carriers and what not...i found a limited slip thingy from eaton for like 450 bucks that fits the 10 bolt..its like 450 bucks...does this seem about right?? I need a major lesson in rearends tho..that didn't sound right, but you guys know what I mean

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

I did it in my 89 IROC. It was easy!! I have 2000 SS wheels so that was nice to remove the spacers. the only thing I have issues with is the parking brake cable brackets that are body mounted. I will get a set from a 4th gen some time. I installed a 98 & up rear.

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

I did a LS1 rear swap, i put one from a 2002 WS6 w/3.42 posi, its a real direct swap, yes the springs will work, i didnt do any modifying even w/the 2 extra discs i just never hooked up the e-brake cable because i have an auto and didnt really have time to do it in the middle of the nite, i would just get the rear end, because what you will pay for spacers and gears is not worth it, sure they are basically the same thing, but think, yours is 10 years older, thats killer, I got mine for 300 bucks, hawksthirdgen.com has a lot along w/thirdgenresource,

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

do they all have 3.42 posi? Because thats really all the gearing I need, iwas gonna go with 3.73's but 3.42's would be alright temporily....i thought they would be a lot more than 300 bucks, and i was going to covert my rearend to disc brakes anyway..it might just be cheaper to go with an LS1 rear...

No, only the 6 speed cars got the 3.42 limited slip. And because a 6 speed car is more prone to breaking the 10 bolt than a similar auto car, they show up for sale fairly often.

As long as you get an ABS only rear, and not an ABS and traction control rear, the brake lines can be bolted right up to your factory T-junction at the rear. Traction control rears used 2 separate brake lines, and the ABS only split like our cars do.

I also have a 2002 TA rear in mine (only a few thousand miles on it), with the optional Auburn differential and 3.42s. I paid $400 for it, with brakes, axles tubes already welded to the housing, and coated with POR-15. Most go for $200-$500. I got a deal, but deals like that are NOT uncommon. You just have to know where to look... www.ls1.com

Wheel fitment is perfect with the LS1 rear and 17x9 98SS wheels. No spacers needed.

The LS1 rear IS stronger than your 1986 10 bolt. Not only are the axles thicker (26 vs 28 spline), but the differential case has been strengthened up as well. Compare your differential case to the LS1 and you'll see what I mean.

Re: LS1 Rearend Swap

Check sig.. Bolted right up.. If you go to my website I believe there are pics of the car on the photo page

www.ntimad8.cz28.com

(it's bad outdated)

But bolted mine right up, it had been previously on a 97 Anniversary ( White two orange stripes, white leather seats, white rims...) It wasn't that bad but had a FOR SCRAP PARTS ONLY title after the insurance seen it after the accident, guy sold the engine and trans together, rims to someone else, Interior to someone else, I bought the rear end for $200.00 Guy said it had a detroit locker 3.42 in it, I know it did have a HKS sticker on the rear end and the the bolts had new hi temp sealant around them(it had been opened before), he wasn't the owner I guess he was the kids uncle or something. the brake lines bolt up and someone around here should know the GM part number that makes the Ebrakes work.. It's a part from a 89 or something.. I dunno Haven't bought the part yet, but I do have it written down.. In my camaro folder, with all the other part numbers and lists and junk.. I had the axle tube welded and I have an LPW Racing girdle and axle tube brace kit.. I put new redline synthetic fluid in it.. Should be good on my automatic, as long as I dont' run slicks.. and I don't plan on it. I hopefully can get some american racing Torq thrust II's 17x11 with custom offset and backspacing use the 4th gen offset and add like the rest to the backspacing.. I might have to roll the fender lip and bang out the wheel well alittle.. Don't know don't have exact measurements for rims yet and just decided on tires.. 315/35R17 Michelin Eagle F1's.. Probably gonna go with some 255's up front? What is the widest up front everyone usually goes?
