Installing headers on a 3rd gen

Im going to get a set up eld. headers for my 92z28. Ive noticed that there isnt alot of room under there to move around. Has anyone installed a set of these before? If so did you have to raise up the engine? What secrets you got for me? thanks

I install SLP headers and I had to rase the engine a little. It's not hard, Just allow you some time to get it done right. Goodluck, charles

Yes,jacking the motor up is needed...atleast when I did Hedmans back on my 87. Theres an AIR tube that goes around back of the motor and is a royal PITA. Other than that its pretty straight forward. Have plenty of beer or jack danials on hand...and a few friends wouldnt hurt either.

I think you can put on shortys without jacking the motor. Ask Traviz over on TGO, he's done it on his 89.

I'm not sure if your installing shorty headers or long tubes.But, I recently installed shorty headers and mac full exhaust without raising the motor.

I'll second that. I installed my SLP 1-3/4" headers (which are bigger than the Edelbrocks you're talking about) on my car without raising the engine - I really wouldn't think that it would be necessary to do that for yours...

I don't know if there are any "secrets" per se, but I did a few things in an attempt to stave off problems down the line:

* Got a heat shield to go over my starter (had to clearance it to make it fit);

* Bought some plug wire heat shielding for the plug wires;

* Used Stage 8 Locking bolts to attach them to the heads;

* Used a better kind of exhaust gasket (the kind with graphite inserts in an aluminum "frame" - Summit has 'em) to seal them to the heads.

It cost a little extra, but I haven't had any problems since I installed 'em in 2000...

Thanks for all the help guys. Ill be saving up for the headers now. I cant wait. They advertise that it will shave "up to a fulls second off your 0-60 time" anyone else test that theory?

Hell yea,headers on a third gen is a good 20-25HP increase...the stock manifolds are GARBAGE.

Although you are 110% correct, it really comes down to which motor he has. He will see more gain w/ headers/full exhaust on a 305 than a 350.

Re: Installing headers on a 3rd gen

Word of warning here All Edlebrock headers are made for Straight plugs Heads. I found this out from Edlebrock so you might want to go with a diff set of heads as well. or change your plugs around.

Re: Installing headers on a 3rd gen

installed some hedman shortys tonight. hed-68470s on a 90 camaro. this is how it went. drivers side. removed valve cover. fell into place. passanger. removed dipstick and it fell into place. however this thirdgen has a lt1 in it didnt have to jack the engine/car or remove the bolts from the mount

Best help I can give you is to junk those Edelcrock headers and get some better ones like Hooker's or SLP's. Spark plug access is horrible on Edelbrock's, so are the welds, and most of the time the air tubes stick down into the ports, restricting access.
