Cool Help Picking out Gears...

i want to switch from 3.23's to 3.73's soon becaues i just installed the HSR, a nice cam, and a 3000 stall torque converter. i want to ask you guys for your suggestions on what i should do to my rear end. i want to, like i said, install 3.73's, but i also want to clean up the rear a little and make it a bit more stronger. thunder racing sells a gear kit for about $400, but i wanted to know if anyone has any better suggestions to help me beef up my rear along side with the 3.73's. thanks guys for all the help

Get the ultimate cap, with axle tube brace, solid pinion spacer, some 3.42 detroit locker, install axle tube brace, weld around the tube ends instead of spot welding... Should hold around 500hp with an automatic and a 3000 stall

Re: Help Picking out Gears...

I did Richmond 3.73's, a T/A Support cover, Raytech crush collar, Auburn Pro Posi, and Royal Purple fluid. Stock axles still and I'm thinking I'd rather break an axle than a ring gear so they're staying for now(knock on wood!). I kept my old 3.08 rear end also as a backup. Sinking money into EVERY modifcation possible still wouldn't give me a solid piece of mind with this rear. Something I do think about is a Cryogenic process for the Ring and Pinion set. Never seen it done but I like the idea. That at the support cover I like.

So far it's seen a 1.80 60 foot and still no whine. Install and setup are as or possibly even more important than the parts inside I'd say.

Re: Help Picking out Gears...

I would say go with stock GM gears...they seem to set up better then most aftermarket gears...they run quieter too, also order the solid pinion spacer from drivetrain direct to use in place of the stock crush sleeve. Then have the axle tube seams welded completely where they are spot welded. Get some superior axles, they are great axles and reasonably priced. As for the posi unit get an Eaton...better then the auburn and far better then the zexel torsen units they use the 4th gens. Top the whole thing off with an aluminum support cover from summit...its a great piece and for the money the damn thing even comes with ARP stainless cover bolts. I wouldnt recommend the axle brace for the simple reason that if your gonna make enough HP to warrant an axle brace on the stock rearend then its time to upgrade to a 12 bolt or 9 inch, IMO.

Re: Help Picking out Gears...

Solid Pinion Spacer + Cover + Brace Kit + ring and gear set = $600

Moser or Currie Rear End = $3000

Um... I'm gonna break one before I buy the other...

Haven't broke it yet.. Should be fine with an automatic..
