Found a great deal on an 84 Z. What to look for?

I found a guy that might want to trade his 84 Z28 305 5 speed hard top, for my 79 VW. Other than a small dent on the driver's fender, it's pretty straight. Anything I should look for specifically? It seems to run strong and teh clutch is fine. It drips a little oil, but looks like valve covers. AC belt has been cut off, but the compressor spins freely. What should I inspect more closely before the trade?
Thanks!

Too many items to list, just remenber its a 20 year old car that may have been beat on in its lifetime. So don't expect much and be prepared to spend money. Good Luck.

Do the obvious things like checking the oil, compression test....but more importantly make sure the body isn't rusting on the fenders, floorpan, check for bondo...
How long have you owned a 3rd Gen car?? Parts are not expensive???

"obvious things" most of what you quoted will be wrong with that car and who knows what else. It a trade between two wore out cars. We are not talking about a Camaro that was well taken care of, but a car the present owner guesses has no value. So we are not going by the same standards you would judge a car.

Yep, the most important thing to look for would be rust. I would never buy a car that had any significant rust on the body. (other than just very minor surface rust)

the most commin thing to look for is rust in the door jam and the inside of the lower half of the door both site look at the trunk to see if the left side is bent up and see if the drivers door closes niceley to tell if the car is bent also how many miles are on it if it has a lot you may need to change the internals aka rebuild valve springs seals lifters rings oil pump crank berrings and so on check the front end tye rods greese fitings ok if broke can not be loose or lot of play i can go on more if you have any more ? e mail me if you want chev86irocz@aol.com

I should be checking the car out closer in the morning. It is basically a beater. I know it's 20 years old, but my VW is 25!. I'll keep you posted tommorow night.
