Firebird rear hatch question

I have a quick question that hopefully someone can answer. My neighbor picked up an 87 Firebird real cheap with some damage to one of the rear quarters and the rear hatch was busted.

Anyway, he found a good deal on an 85 hatch from another Firebird and he put it on. He called me over one day to show me what it looked like and there were HUGE gaps and it sat higher than it should so it wouldn't open because it hit the roof-line.

So long story short, is an 85 hatch slightly different than an 87? Or are there potentially bigger issues with the car he picked up?

Thanks!

Thanks for the response so far guys. I just realized that I put this in the wrong section too! Haha, doesn't really belong in the Powertrain discussion, it probably belongs in the general discussion. So if a mod wants to move it, feel free

Hatch glass is hatch glass, I don't think they ever changed the dimensions for that would mean re-tooling for the entire body. My guess is that you've got realignment issues. Maybe the hatch bracketry just needs adjustment. Either that, or the car got rear-ended. There should be some tell-tale bending, if that's the case.
