crate engine companies that build SPECIFICALLY for the TPI?

assuming i wanted to build an absolutly nasty torque monster TPI car....

what companies build crate longblocks just for the TPI? obviously they have to take into account the lack up top end breathing. so an engine that delivers good hp, and monster torque all below 5500rpm (give or take).

initially this would be just directly swapped in...with obvious ignition, exhautt and injector and ECM upgrades.
but things like bigger runners, throttle body and upper/lower plenums (or ported) being stock for the time being.

how do the crate engines from places like GMPP work with the tpi? how bout those edelbrocks you can find in Summit or Jegs?

i'd consider swapping the lower plenum to accomodate vortec heads if need-be. so don't rule those out.

there's an ~89 IROC for sale near me....would love to build a nasty street car. but i absolutely want to keep the torque building TPI setup.

More of a street replacement motor but specific to the TPI line.

Are you going to tow with it? TPI makes for a nasty sreet car until the end of first gear. The Vortec head is a worthwhile upgrade over any previous head. Any of the GM long blocks will work, the vortec headed 350 is nice. The fastburn 383 is nice also but throwing a TPI intake on it is painful. Tose heads have big ports and would appreciate more than a straw to breathe through. Whatever you chose, you might be best with chosng your own cam. A ZZ3 cam or Hotcam might not be best for what you want. Goodluck!

Google T@L Engine Development. They offer some nasty numbered torque monsters for a relatively reasonable price. I myself went with the forged 408 longblock. They're a good company if You don't mind the wait.

I just did this last year. I bought this motor. http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD360...ripEngine.aspx It's a TPI Vortec crate 350 that has 360hp@4200 and 416lb/ft at 4200. It comes with the TPI baseplate. You just have tp provide 30# inj. and Edelbrock runners. I could not get SLP runners to work on this motor. The baseplate says Scoggin Dickey but it's made by Edelbrock. Same one that Summit sells.

Anyway if you have any questions send me your home or cell # in a private message. This has been a good motor. But I'm running 24#inj and have not made full use of the HP and Torque yet. My miscalculation. But I will order new 30# inj. today and have PCM4LESS reflash my chip to accomodate for them. My signature has my other mods.

Here is a video of the engine http://youtube.com/watch?v=t1eNVPr0pkg

Use the Vortec heads for sure, they easily make 20-30 more HP than the L98 factory heads.

If your going to go through all this to get a motor and such, why not sell the TPI intake setup complete and buy a stealth ram and go that route?

i think that's the motor i was thinking of when i posted this. i had seen it before, but couldn't track it down. didn't realize it was SDPC.

not planning on towing, but i just want the nostalgia of the TPI setup. and i like how it looks.

if you were to take that motor listed above and put a Stealth Ram on it...what would teh power increase be?

i guess my other reason for thinking of this route is that i don't drag race. i live on an island in the middle of the ocean, we have basically 1 road and some dead end side streets with no curves. i've had my 400rwhp LS1 for almost 6 yrs, and have yet to go to a track, and i've been in 3 street races.
but i like to drive hard on the streets at speed <80mph

so a short stop light to stoplight torquey engine is what i'm looking for.

If you're into the nostalgia and looks of the TPI setup, you'll love the old school tunnel ram look of the Steath Ram. And that SR will make nearly the same torque as the TPI, but with A LOT more power above 5000rpm, even against an aftermarket runner and base setup.

the cam is a big part of what your wanting to do. out of the box a stock TPI is a stump puller but as one member said, it runs out in the upper RPMs but doing what your doing you wont need much and many will tell you the TPI will jump an LS1 from the start but the short winded TPI will get passed.
the COMP 08-300-8 will bump ya up a tad and still let you retain alot of what the TPI is all about and no programming needed.

Well keep in mind that if you get the Scoggin crate motor it has a HOT cam already in it.
