Re: Casting numbers

Next question, I got the grease cleaned off the heads and noticed they have different casting marks. So I pulled the valve covers off and one is a 493 (#3873493) cast on September 27 1971. The right side head is a 882 (#333882) cast on April 21 of 1976. What are (if any) the differences in these heads? I know they are both heavy casting smog heads but what about port volume, combustion chamber volume, etc. The engine was running with them on, but are the similar enough th run as a set?

All I know is what I read here.

the head guide I think would give you the info you are lookng for.

Re: Casting numbers

Actually what you have in your first post is an engine code not the casting number, the casting number would be ocated on teh back of the block. By the engine suffix you gave its one of these three engines

1970 TBC 350 convfwd cabs, a/t 255 4 C-10 to 3500
1970 TBC 350 m/t, 3 spd 255 4 K-10 & 20
1979 TBC 350 conv. cab, m/t,fed L LS9 165 4 C-10 to 2500

Its a truck block, get the actual casting number for the exact model.

And as far as the heads go, 882s suck 493s suck less, buy a new set and be done with it.

Re: Casting numbers

Engine code, casting number??? Who cares?

I was just wondering what the displacement of the engine was. I know that 882 are not the greatest sets of heads, but I am going to use them if they are compatible with 493's. Because this is just an engine for a '76 Chevy farm truck and they were recently rebuild by their apperance. So I don't care if you think I need a different set of heads, I want to know their similarities/differences.
