Can Throttle Position Sensor be cleaned?
#3
To check the throttle position sensor (TPS) you'll need to turn your car key to RUN but don't start it. Pull off the plug on the front of the TPS and then put your volt meter probes in the top two holes. Specs call for 0.54 volts at idle. Rotating the throttle lever should get it to over 4.0 volts at full throttle. If it's too high or too low at idle, you'll need to adjust the two screws on the side. Simply loosen them and then turn the TPS a bit until the idle numbers are correct.
Some volt meters won't be able to reach all the way in the TPS holes. In that case, you'll need a jumper wire that will be able to slide in there. With jumper wire you can also simply slide it around the wire with the plug still plugged in.
Lots of people adjust these. Mine was perfect at 0.54 volts when I checked it. I think they only really go out of sync after you've fiddled with the minimum idle speed screw.
