It used to be 20yrs=Collectors item, 30yrs Classic. Now I think it's more subjective adding in the elements of rarity and popularity.
As the saying goes, "there's a difference between Old and "Antique"...

Washington state
Antique motor vehicles include those vehicles over 40 years old displaying Horseless Carriage plates and those vehicles at least 30 years old and older with either collector vehicle license plates or a Washington license plate manufactured for use in the same year as the vehicle manufacture date
This is from the Wasington state Website http://www.dol.wa.gov/vs/tr-spp.htm#Antique
I think each state is diff.

Owners of a modified antique automobile manufactured before 1949 registered in a New Jersey street rod club, an affiliate of the National Street Rod Association, Inc. may apply for a Street Rod plate that costs $15.

Well lets see, if you are twenty years old now and own a Camaro it will be a classic when you retire in 45 years. That is if you still own it.

In Texas a car can be claimed a classic at 25 yrs of age. you can claim it as an antique at 25 yrs of age as long as you only drive it for parades and take it to autoshows. I checked today

For FL is its 20yrs As I said Each state is diff.

What age does a car have to be for a "Collector" car tag?

Currently, a collectible vehicle is an automobile (any weight) or truck weighing not more than 5,000 lbs. , for private use, that is 20 years or older from the date of manufacture. As of September 30, 1999, the collectible license plates will no longer be issued. Antique plates will still be available in your local tax collector's office for vehicles 30 years old or more.
This is FLs requirement.
