skip the manual pump and use a electronic fuel pump
you have two threads I replied to both of them

The electronic fuel pump will have no pull on the engine and you will have better more consistent pressure. more responsive

Some things to consider.
Carb'ed engines only require 6 to 7psi. at the carb. So you need to get one like the Holley pump which is internally regulated to 7psi. If you get a high pressure pump you'll need to add a regulator and a bypass line going back to the tank.
Electric pumps do a better job of pushing fuel then pulling, so you'll need to mount it near the tank. Which means adding hoses from the tank outlet to the pump and from the pump to the fuel line.
Then you have to wire it. You can either add a separate switch or tap off the ignition side of the ignition switch. There should be a couple of unused connection on the fuse box that you can use. It is advisable to add a relay for the pump as it requires fairly large gauge wire. Run your power wire directly from your bat. or bat. source to the relay and then to the pump and make sure you have a good ground near the pump or run a wire back to the bat. And of course you have to find a mounting location near the tank. If you don't want to hear it whine all the time it needs to have some kind of rubber isolation.
When you remove the mech. pump you need a block-off plate for the pump mounting hole.
If you don't want to do all this, a mech. pump will supply all the volume and pressure you need for a 650 double pumper and your horse power with your 3:42 gears. Take the old pump out put the new one in, your done!!

Thanks for your knowledgeable input !!! I seen the post floating around no one replied
Trying to keep the post active ....
I have a seen a lot of people convert to an electronic fuel pump. after what I just learned from you this seems to be over kill
at what horsepower do you need a electronic fuel pump ??
lots of mods in your signature must be a nice looking car you got any pictures ??

Re: 86 Z28 350 Carb, What Fuel Pump should I get?
Difficult to answer as it depends more on combination then rwhp numbers. I personally would be using an electric pump if I were running a "race" engine above 400hp. By race I mean shifting at or near 7000rpm with relatively high numerical gears 4:10 or above. But racer do have a tendency for over kill. Better safe then sorry philosophy!
When I converted my 84, which started as a 305, to a 383 with a 750 double pumper and 3:73 gears, 400hp, I ran into a problem with the fuel delivery. But it wasn't the mech. pump but the fuel line size. The 305 only had a 5/16" fuel line. As I was building this car to race I went ahead and replaced the entire fuel system. Fuel cell, electric pump, braided SS line to a pressure reg. etc. Probably over kill for this engine. But I never had fuel problems again.
