84 Trans Am HO

A friend has a 84 TA HO, that has a bad carb/ and engine smokes. It has all this emiisions ect.. Just got a good deal on a complete 350 carb to pan. I want to replace the one in it with this one. Can I just remove the engine and put this one in. What about the tranny thats in this car is it controlled by anything speacial (700r). If so what will I need to do to make the tranny correct?? I plan on removing all the unwanted emission/vacuum hoses, and go with the 350 installed. Any pointers on this install??

Its fairly straight forward. I did this same swap about 9 or 10 years ago. Use your exhisting throttle cable bracket and you should have no problems hooking the kickdown cable up to the carb on the 350. There will be lots of un-used wires left. Hopefully the 350 has a distributor because you won't have good results using the stock computer controlled one. Also don't be surprised if the choke light stays on and you have to track down a very annoying buzzer under the dash and yank it to shut it up....I did.

The 84 had a "computor" controlled carb. It's under the kick panel on the pass. side. You don't need, and I would recomend that you not use this carb. Use a Non-computor controlled carb. You can, if you want, then remove the computor and wiring.
The 700R4 is cable controlled, for down shift, and does not have any computor or electronic controls.
DUI makes a nice distributor for this year. Although any good HEI dist. will work.
Your speedo should also be cable driven.

So yes it should be an easy direct swap.

Incorrect, the computer controls the lock-up on the converter. Summit and Jeggs sell kits to control the lock-up converter if you wish or just get the kit to make the trans a non-lock up transmission.

Later there are solenoids that can help control shifting. There are a lot of different valve bodies for the 700R4 in my ATSM book for the 86 and earlier transmissions.

They were constantly upgrading the trans. Got good 87 later. But if it was me i would use the 350 with a good intake,headers,y-pipe and rebuild the q-jet. Almost 800 cfm and all the old tricks work on them. Uses an o2 to calibrate fuel and that means 14.7 to 1 afr. Great setups when tuned and working good.

Best bet is 88 and later since 87 was a transition year and some are like the 86, some had small upgrades and the later ones had even more upgrades and are like the 88 transmissions

There's nothing wrong with the CCLC quadrajet on a 305 H.O. ; I used mine for 140,000 miles, and took it to autocrosses, drag races, road courses, and everything. It's fully capable of handling a built 350 engine, with it's 780 cfm secondaries. About all you need to do is put in a cheap performance chip in the computer to advance the timing a bit, then tune it just like a mechanical secondary carb with metering rods, just like the old days. Then, when cruising, the computer will use your O2 sensor to modulate the primary metering rod duty cycle to push the mixture to stoichiometric. It works great.

So drop your 350 in, tweak your secondaries with different metering rods and hangers, and you'll be fine. I also suggest a looser lockup-style torque converter, probably a 2400 RPM(ish) to wake it up. Otherwise, you are good to go. I've have my same '84 H.O. for twenty years now.
