84 camaro question
first off,i dnt know what forum this would go under, srry. Ok i just bought this car 3-23-13 it is an 84 v8 (305) carb. 700r4 tranny. that is all i know its stock other than they changed the exaust tip but anny way i bought it not working. was told it needed a starter, i bought one was to small, then a friend who knows stuff about cars told me i need a better batery not a starter. so i have a brand new $200 red top optima battery, when i turn the car over it cranks slow and wont start it has been setting not running for a while when i got it the cables were corroded. my question is what would make the car turn so slow not to turn over with a new battery. would it be the starter, mabey the spark plugs i put new spark plug wires on and it is in the correct firing order, im thinking mabey buy new cables. any help would be appreciated thanks guys..

Re: 84 camaro question
check the cable at the starter and other starter connections.....an oreilly's clerk said that a 305 starter was a 30 minute job....[?]....'.jack up the front end......loosen 2 bolts......then check the wires'.....i just got my 92 rs 305 in december......have not messed with the starter...but i recall that after setting for 3 weeks, the car did turn over slowly- but did start......now it is like a jet engine when cranking....plug wires would not affect starting speed if the order is correct.......is the engine properly grounded to the body with a hefty ground strap.....?......jim....ps- engine oil weight ok....?.....not filled with stp....?......if you are in a cold climate, try heating the engine with a torpedo heater.....[about 10 feet from the grille......you don't want to melt the car......].......

Re: 84 camaro question
Thanks, I'm going to change all the fluids bc it has set for a while im sure they are low anyway
But as for the starter it tested good. It's about a 10 min job. And the battery cables have 2 wires from both positive and negative cables I have no idea where they go well one goes to the block but the other not sure and I noticed a green and brown wire that are cut not going to anything there is a spot on the alternator that needs a wire I'm thinking its the green but not sure that would affect the starting at all.
