1991 z28 manual trans swap? from 84' camaro
Hello, i have a 1991 z28 with the 5.7 auto, i have a chance to buy a 1984 z28 with the 5speed and i want to do a complete convertion.
Will ALL the parts convert easy?
I will buy a new clutch and flywheel, and im going to build the T5 trans before it will go into my 91 z28.
Im looking to buy the car tomorrow 3/22/2011 so if anyone can give me a fast response will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

All the parts will convert just fine but I think you are throwing your money away. An '84 is a weak, NWC T5 and I'm not even sure if it has a hydraulic clutch. The torque from your 5.7 will demolish this trans quite quickly even if rebuilt. It's not worth the time/effort to swap. Just my $.02

I have known people who built a manual trans and would not withstand the power output of a TPI 350 for any amount of time. Maybe if you spend enough money it would be possible to withstand a TPI 350.

All 3rd Gen. Camaro's have the hydraulic clutch.
While I don't entirely agree with the claim that '84 5 speed is particularly "weak",(I ran my '84's stock 5 speed behind my 383 for years with no problems. And this is with a 3:73 gear, heavy duty clutch, and very large & sticky tires.) I would, for a street car either, make the convertion and drive it gingerly until I could do an upgrade to the 6 speed, or go directly to the 6 speed.
The most common upgrade is to buy a used 4th Gen. 6 speed. Lots of articles on this conversion, so I won't go into the details here. The other option is to buy a "retro T56" which uses the 3rd. Gen. aftermarket bellhousing, clutch, and hydraulics. Bu tthis option is more expensive.
One small problem with the '84 5 speed is that it has a mechanical speedometer drive.
