the only problem i see with that is the jump from the V6 to the V8. although i do like the pricing bracket you came up with, i think it would be to GMs disadvantage to only seperate the SS and RS by $2000, but offer so much more performance. i think having the models seperated by 75-100hp respectively using your prices would seem more logical and more consumer friendly.

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....

400hp LS2 is the minimum V8 that should be under the hood.

Don't think you're gonna see a 6.0 and a 6.2. I would bet the 5.3, or whatever variation of it thats around in a few years will be there, then whatever the top V8 of the time will be there as well.

It just seems to me that the V8 in the Camaro has to have some kind of prestige to it.

I can't help but have the feelings in the back of my mind that if the top engine in the Z28 model is the LS2, it will seem like kind of a copout, since the LS2 is already being used in the Vette, GTO, and the Trailblazer SS.

Am I off my rocker in thinking the engine should be something shared between the Camaro and Vette only?
The new Caddys use the Vette chassis, so the Vette isn't even unique anymore.

And since Chevy shared the chassis with Caddy, then perhaps Caddy should return the favor and let Chevy make use of its supercharged engine that is going into the new XLR.

Imagine what the aftermarket and the tuners can do with this engine.

I think 450hp is out of the question,my take is
1. 3.9/250hp
2. 5.3/345hp
3. 6.0/400hp

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....

I think we'll be doing quite well to have a LS2 level, 400ish hp engine in the top SS or Z28 Camaro.

I think it's pure dreaming to even mention getting a LS7 or LS9. The Camaro never even got the LS6 before and that was a cheap cheap upgrade compared to a LS7 or something similar... (course the Fbod was dying at the time and the LS6 was only around for the 2 final years of the Fbody, but still).

Realistically I will be jumping for joy over a LS2-level powered 5thgen that looks similar to that clay concept. If it doesn't weigh over 3500 lbs it will be an awesome performer. People seem to be a little jaded around here IMO...

Not to beat on the dead horse and totally dig up the issue AGAIN (ok, yes that's what I'm doing...) but I don't see the SS being some midrange offering w/ a Z28 being this 450+ hp super killer top model either. The Z28 has never been that... None of the previous arguments even approached making me think otherwise. It's pure revisionism to bring up the original 302 powered Zs and make them out to have been rulers of the street over the top SS cars... I have not really seen any insider info posted by Guy or similar to really hint at this midrange SS/topdog Z28 setup. Did I miss something, I keep seeing the same few select "non-insiders" posting how sure they are, but I'm not buying it??

I find it more likely if both models are offered at the same time (which I'm doubting for the first couple years at least) they'll have basically indentical engines with some slight suspension or cosmetic differences between the two, just like with the 4thgens and similarly the 3rdgens w/ the IROC and Z28... Guess we'll see...

if you're good at reading between the lines, search for RP's post saying something to the effect of:

"When you say i drive a Z28, people know it's a Camaro.........when you say i drive an SS, they know you drive a Chevy, but don't know what kind"

I'm saying what is up with all this "base 5.3 V8" talk? The bottom level V8 should be the LS2.

the base V8 talk is alluding to the fact that a mlot of us think there should be a model that is a step above the V6, but a step under the LS2.

Actually I was just reading that, but I still question how different the two cars will be engine wise. That line of questions and thoughts seemed to be more about the handling and appearance items going to the SS and the Z28 getting none. Perhaps they're looking to reverse that, but will the Z28 get a 450 hp motor and the SS get relegated to a 325-350hp midlevel car??? I'm not seeing it yet... I'm still thinking just some handling and appearance options differentiating the two (if they're offered at the same time), not a serious engine upgrade, but who knows (not me)...

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....

i'd say considering the history that the Z28 has throughout Camaros production, it would definetley give it an edge to be the top dog model........and from what we've heard, the top dog isn't coming out til 18 months after launch.
