How much does the LS7 cost to build?

This post is in reference to Bob Lutz's recent statement on his blog about the possibility of the 5th gen recieving the LS7. I know how much the crate engine costs, but how much does it actually cost GM to manufacture this engine? Anyone have any idea? How much profit does GM turn on a crate LS7? It would be interesting to know how much more a 5th gen would cost with the addition of an LS7. Obviously, the other performance options to come with this motor are going to add more to the price, but I am trying to keep this one step at a time.

Re: How much does the LS7 cost to build?

Its not manufacturing the LS7 that will add cost to the Camaro

Its the millions it will cost to certify an engine for a model that will sell in low numbers.

That’s where the LS7 will run into problems getting into the Camaro...the beancounters

and Stefan nails it once again.

hopefully Maximum Bob can convince Rick it's worth pushing through.

I think we need to move on from the LS7. I know what Lutz said, but did he say anything about it being the LS7? Could certifications be nearly complete for a 2008 (or even 2009) engine?

The LS7 will be an exclusive engine. And by the time the top level Camaro is out, there will be other 500hp options...

I agree with that statement totally......now haven’t there been talks about a an LS9 and even something else LSx?

There was a thread a while back that touched on this subject of future LSx engines that was pretty interesting, when I get home from work I'll see if I can dig it up.

Yeah, I think it was pretty clear when Lutz said what he did that he meant the LS7. He said we have a certified 100 hp engine in the z06 Corvette. Hard to not interpret that as meaning the LS7.

the ls7 is built just like ls1's were...assembly line. I saw articles in two mainstream magazines. Each worker has 20 minutes to perform their task on the motor.

I think he meant the Z06 would get a bump in horsepower so we get more breathing room for the Camaro. I didn't necessarily take that as him sayin the Camaro would get an LS7. But who knows?

honestly, I believe Lutz was just boasting about possibilities.. thats it..

In fact, I view this concept still as a possibility.. I'd like to think a highly probably possibility though.

Lutz probably was just boasting about possibilities, but no one can truly discount the possibility of an LS7 finding its way into a Camaro. Alot can happen in the few years it is going to take for the 5th gen to reach production.

Re: How much does the LS7 cost to build?

It think it is TOTALLY possible for an LS7 to find its way into the Camaro. Why not? They can assemble it on the same line as the LS2's are assembled. It does NOT require to be hand-built ..... that "exclusiveness" can be left for the Z06. But ~500 HP can and SHOULD be AVAILABLE in the Camaro .

Re: How much does the LS7 cost to build?

By the time Camaro returns, the LS7 in the top Corvette will have been replaced by the supercharged LS9. So why not?
