That is certainly a large registration fee....but it is still a quite small amount when compared to 9% of $38k. In the three states I've recently lived in, registration fees for a year were all under $100. Taxes were ~4% in VA, 7+% in TX, and 9+ % in TN.

VA has an income tax, TX & TN do not....hence one reason for the difference in sales tax. TX property taxes are also much higher than VA - not sure yet about TN.

I suppose there are swindlers out there that do that sort of thing....

Regardless, and as stated, Edmunds bought it in California, and their "out the door" price was $42k. And that still gets the "ouch" from me. Your reaction may be different.

They chose to pay a $2500 markup. Subtracting tax, etc., on that amount, I figure that means the real price is ~$39k. It's not anybody's fault but theirs that they don't know better than to pay the markup.

So, how do you feel about 39k out the door? Still ouch?

$65, give or take a few bucks. Here they do it by vehicle type, not age. Passenger car is $65 or $67, I don't remember. The tax was 6.25% or something.

Yes - but I suppose it would be a slightly less painful ouch. For me....personally....I'd go elsewhere for that kind of money - most likely something like an 08 Vette (though that isn't really relevant to this discussion).

And I certainly would not pay a markup. Never wanted a car that bad.
