Camaro chief claims ZL1 will outperform Shelby GT500

"We've done simulations. We predict that the ZL1 will be quicker to 60 than the [2013] GT500."

Wow this still sound like a face saving article GM is still trying to push. I'm not saying the ZL1 wont outperform the 2013 GT500 in some area's, but they are talking like its forgone conclusion that it faster then the mustang in every speed matrix.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if somewhat heavier (especially in the rear), somewhat less powerful (thus easier to get moving without hazing the tires), better tired (see previous comment) ZL1 would indeed beat the GT500 to 60 mph.

What about after that?

Just from some preliminary articles and the Ring time it looks like the ZL1 will be quite tough to beat on a road course.
At the drag strip or top speed I don't see how they can make up the power to weight ratio advantage the GT500 should have.

GM seems to have gotten the Zeta chassis set up well and that may win them some comparos where the GT500 wins the speed tests and the ZL1 handles better. Early indications are that the MRC, IRS and steering make for a competent but potent ride and that may trump the Mustang overall.

It will all boil down to which manufacturer can get the car to hook the quickest. In first and second gears, a 580hp car will roast the tires just as easily as a 650hp car will.
