[Interior] Window tint questions

Window tint questions
I'm looking at having the windows in my SS tinted. I talked to a guy this weekend who said he could probably do the side and rear windows for between $200-$300. He mentioned it starts out as a CAD file and then is sent to a plotter where the shapes are cut and is then applied to the glass surface.
I want this done, but he couldn't tell me if the interior would have to be taken apart to do it (i.e. door panels off, taking out glass, trim, etc)
Does anyone have experience or know the process for what it takes? I want tinted windows, but not really if they have to take the whole car apart to do it...

Re: Window tint questions
300 bucks?! wow. my guy is really hooking me up. i think mine cost me 100 bucks. he tinted my whole hummer for 250...and its a lifetime warranty. the only disassembly that may be done is the door panels. but they dont even take them off. they just lift the panel up a bit to give a gap so the tint can go under the weather strip.

Re: Window tint questions
I paid close to $500 to do my Camaro but it was for SEMA and I needed absolute perfection. People think I am nuts but it is without a doubt the best tint job I have ever had done and with the finest materials. The guy that did mine also does cars for GM for the show circuit.
I think I have seen them use plastic wedges to make room to get the tint below the rubber stripping, but never take a panel off.

500 bucks?! wow.you basically paid for the name then. you know there are peole who do just as good quality and use the same, if not better materials for ALOT less? ive never had any issues with the guy i use. ive known him for years. hes been tinting for almost 20 years. never had a bubble ,crack, slice, fade, nothing. he uses top of the line material too.

Re: Window tint questions
It was worth it to me I am very particular about my tint. Dunno why, that's just me. I think it was closer to $400...but still above that. I'd have to check my paperwork. I paid for knowing that the guy would do it right with the best materials out there. He came highly recommended and his attention to detail was great.. I also had the windshield done for the show and that was included in the price. I have seen tint jobs where the dot-matrix was weird looking...spotty...on the side windows. He did a perfect job. I paid the same amount (or more) with someone else and got a bad job with my previous Camaro....but that is another story.

wow. i must really be getting the hook up from my guy. he normally charges me 50 bucks to tint 2 front windows on something like an escalade or tahoe. 100 tinted my trans am. 150 tinted my camaro. 200 tinted my old STS. and 250 on my humemr and old escalade.
speaking of which...i need to get my windows tinted on my silverado.

Re: Window tint questions
I was just looking at some DIY kits today. My local shop wants $220, but, they seemed a little shady when I asked if they use film that has metals in it. They kept saying "I'm pretty sure it doesn't" and they didn't know the brand, it was just on a roll- not a risk I'm willing to take no matter how much of a warranty they toss in.
I found a couple of good kits online that are pre-cut and I'm tempted to either do it myself or buy what I want and take it to get installed at a reliable shop.

Re: Window tint questions
agreed. This is why they won't be seeing my car in those bays, ever. We have a lot of places around here so I'm just going to find a reputable one which may cost a little more up front but I'll take that over shotty work any day.
