Re: interior lights

Yes I did that on my 2010. It was an earlier build that had the factory plugs for ambient lighting.

To get the light tube send a pm to 2SSRS.
You will need at least 2 of the GM door lights, a light tube, a small piece of aquarium tubing, and some scotchlok connectors. A little sanding might be involved if you go the method that looks most like the doors.

If if is the the grey color and you sand it, get some Toyota Touch up paint. Color Code 1b2 or antique sage pearl.

My 2000 Camry was a spot on match for the GM panels.

Re: interior lights

The way I'm looking at doing it, I'm getting some rigid 3/8 aquarium tubing, some EL wire and inverter, and I'm attaching it to the back of the dash insert panel. From what I've read, the most labour intensive part is sanding a small bit of paint off the back, and having the tube lined up in the proper spot to illuminate the panel.

Re: interior lights

I am interested in doing this in the coming months. I have seen a few ways of doing it but I am unsure which one is best. What's the latest/best way to do it?

Jason,
Let me know if you are out this way in Lansing, I'd be glad to show you my setup.

I am going to say using the GM lights with the light tube is the best, that way it matches what you have in the doors.

I've helped 2 other enthusiasts with this mod.

Also here is something to help. I had an earlier car with the GM badge of excellence. That meant I had the factory plugs for the ambient light. I made my own splitters from mouser electronics that plug into the GM plugs.

This was to make a 2 way splitter for the drivers side, and a 3 way splitter for the passenger side. I have added 5 GM leds. One for ambient light, one for the drivers side footwell, then another for the passenger side ambient light, footwell, and the last was used for the glovebox light.

Re: interior lights

I was out in the Lansing area all last week.

So I had the GM Chicklet on my car, which will help. The way you did it looks pretty much like factory! Nice and uniform. Nice job.

Will that work with my orange lighting?

Re: interior lights

Jason, if your car is a pre 9160000 vin, you should have the connector above the fuse panel and in behind the gauge cluster. For those like myself with a 9221000 vin, we've got to seek alternatives, like a harness that Ofer has put together. I'm scrapping the EL wiring, because of the sanding involved, and going with the LED/light tube like what we already have in the door panels from the factory. Using the GM LEDs, it should look the same as my doors.

My car is in storage and there's still snow on the ground so I won't be doing it yet, but when I do, I'll put together a how-to.

Supply list that I'm getting for the mod is the following:
1x custom harness
3x red/orange GM LEDs (for orange interior, blue are also available) sans plastic housing.
1x digikey tubing
2 2" lengths of 5/16 vinyl tubing, to be cut to hold the LED to the light tube
Roll of electrical tape

The custom harness allows the abl to be dimmed, and is for those of us with a VIN higher than 9160000 to be able to simply plug and play with the GM LEDs. We don't have the 2 connectors behind the dash that could have been used. Like I mentioned earlier, there is one above the fuse box on the drivers side, and the other is wrapped in a wire pack behind the speedo/tachometer.

FYI, I believe Ofer's attachs the ambient light to the instrument panel circuit. It behaves almost like the ambient light circuit with one exception. If you dim the dash it will not turn off. The ambient light will turn off.

If you don't mind that then it will be fine. If you do want to attach it to the feature lighting, so you can shut it off all the way, you'll need to tap the wires in the kick panels that run to the lights in the doors.

I had red lights in the doors and dash to match my RJT, I didn't keep them very long, as they weren't bright enough. I think you will need 2 on the passenger side. I was able to get away with just 1 lamp as the Ice blue is lighter.

Jason, you may want to get the mouser parts and make your own splitters like I did.
